It's worse than that. The whole article is attacking a straw man, which so many software blog articles do. I'm not sure I would take the example in a Wikipedia article to be the pinnacle of software engineering. Sure, it would be strange

I know it's just a blog post, but the section on "Parametric Polymorphism" says that the same code executes for any type. But in the example given, "a > b" will evaluate to entirely different operations depending on the type, and in fa

Agreed. Some other entries on the list speak more to the current topics than readers' vocabulary, like Renminbi and Manichean.

As they say, "All generalizations are false". Anyone can come up with anecdotes supporting either side of this argument, and as usual they are all right. Some options are the results of indecisive developers, who would be doing the user a

I forget the exact context, but Joel wrote about this exact same thing a while back. By lowering the barrier for users to leave (and take their stuff with them), they will be more likely to join. You keep them with service, not lock-in.

I'm told that chess teams will sometimes do this. Usually, the nth best player on each team play against each other. The same strategy you describe can be used to increase the team's chance of winning the match. I don't know if it's cons

I would prefer you don't. Meta is boring and usually unwelcome on HN (from what I've seen). I don't want to read a comment about how you voted or meant to vote.

Metafilter does that, and I think that helps people continue a discussion that they are interested in, regardless of its effect on "reputation". HN does a similar thing with the "threads" link, but it only helps for conversations the user

I don't think so. Or at least not at the cost of inhibiting discussion. I don't have any answers, and as the article discussed, you can't design a reputation scheme in a vacuum - you need to define your goals and align the incentives with

I don't expect too many people on HN are doing SharePoint work, but if you are, you need to get VS 10 now. They've added templates for a variety of projects, and single-click compile/package/retract/deploy/debug of your project.

I'm not that familiar with Digg (it's the same as Reddit though, right?), but two major things occur to me: 1) I'm much less likely to vote a answer/question up/down on SO than I am at Reddit. On SO, if I'm not asking or answering, I'm rar
