The types of people who used Parler went to Gab, since Gab has stayed consistently online the last few years.

The privacy policy was never "walked back", they decided to do it anyway after the controversy (on HN and other platforms) died down. Here's a newer article showing the metadata being sent to Facebook (presumably for advertis

I don't like it either. I use Substack (and previously Medium) when I want to read long-form content instead of tweets. If I wanted tweets, I'd use Twitter. But Substack Notes allows for greater potential monetization (ick): TikTo

I can vouch for the Pentel EnerGel recommendation. As a left-handed person who tends to smudge a lot of other inks, EnerGels write smoothly without smudging. They're also cheap enough to buy a whole pack and not worry about losing them

My friends and family are more likely to already have Facebook or Discord, and are unlikely to successfully navigate Mastodon onboarding even if it made sense for that use case. I hate Facebook but Discord is already fulfilling the role of

Absolutely. I was prescribed an APAP with the default pressures set from 4-20. The doctor claimed that the "machine would do all the work" but I still had poor sleep quality. Ended up downloading Sleepyhead (the predecessor to OSC

If you read the PDF linked in the article, it states that the speaker was literally shouted down.

Yep, every generation brings something new to the table and gatekeeping is going to kill the hobby. I can't do 20wpm, but the older hams around me can't figure out FT8.

To be fair, r/facebook and r/instagram are equally as bad. I'm not sure there's a social media site that has good support for end users (not advertisers).

Instead of the blue checkmark for verification it's been replaced with gold (for companies) and sliver checkmarks (for governments/politicians). And an individual can link his account with an verified organization (like the CEO of

I use Rumble and Locals frequently. Basically they're large enough now that normal creators (and not just those banned for extreme content) will post there, so if someone has both a YouTube and a Rumble, I watch the Rumble to support c

Because many of the HN comments (at the time of posting) were talking about Elon and his possible motives, but if he didn't make the change then that's not relevant.

Was this algorithmic change made before Elon's purchase or afterwards? The article doesn't say. Considering that the Ukraine conflict has been going on since 2014 it would be nice to get more info before bringing out the pitchfork

I agree with this assessment. Early on I took these types of articles seriously but at this point I think they're writing what they want to see happen, not what is actually happening. If people want Twitter to die (note it's 2023
