Prescient. Nowadays, most computer scientists don't explicitly worry about hardware failures, but we still love randomized algorithms. Often it's easy to prove that a randomized algorithm has a desirable property with probability

I prefer git for the bulk of the writing process because it lets you make well structured commits, use your favorite editor, and doesn't depend on having a strong internet connection. Even so, you can't beat overleaf for the final

But even after you decide to allocate << 50% of your information bandwidth to chroma, there may still be ways to use that allocation than are more effective (perceptually) than 2x downsampling.

Good point. When compressing a full video to a size target, I've always felt the 1080p, squashed version was still better than the 720p, less-squashed version.

Is this optimization required by the language semantics or some standard (vs. being only a description of mainline rustc's implemented optimizations)?

If you want the attention of a crowd, speak at 10am. Any earlier, the night people won't be well-rested. 11am, the morning people become hungry for lunch and impatient. After lunch, anyone who overate will be sleepy. By the time everyo

Same for the the orthogonal matrices, or the diagonal matrices, or the symmetric matrices, or the unit determinant matrices, or the singular matrices ... They are all sets of Lebesgue measure zero.

How is the prng over engineered? I agree its a little clunky for casual use but it makes all the right decisions, imo, for serious use of prngs (e.g. reproducible experiments for Monte Carlo methods in simulation and statistics)

I agree with you. I stopped using Matlab for my academic work because I don't consider the results reproducible. Of course, that hasn't stopped 99.5% of control theorists, but every bit of useful code released in the open source a

euler angles are sort of the odd one out, a particularly bad way to represent rotations. Orthonormal matrices, quaternions, skew-symmetric tensors with exponential map -- all represent SO(3) without gimbal lock, with different pros and cons

A low level flight controller needs only statically allocated memory, so one of the main benefits of Rust is irrelevant. The syntax is still nice though.

yes, natural movements are approximately energy-minimizing. The optimal control algorithms used by BD probably have energy minimization as their main objective.

Great explanation and detail. If one faces a badly conditioned problem, one must think about the error inherent to the inputs. Anything measured from real sensors is already corrupted by that perturbation matrix. Even in some perfect scenar

shopify's problem can be fixed without microservices by writing modular code. The monolith should be structured as a set of libraries. I find it so strange, the way these microservice debates always assume that any codebase running in

Writing a .mod player is a fun recreational programming project. I kind of want to get an Amiga so I can hear the sound of the Paula chip doing resampling by changing the audio clock rate instead of my PC doing digital resampling to 48kHz.

I generally separate operands, but in dense math expressions it's not always the best for readability. x = (-b + sqrt(b**2 + 4*a*c) / (2*a) x = (- b + sqrt(b ** 2 + 4 * a * c) / (2 * a) ... Although, one could
