The dependence is already there. The only reason people even noticed <video> is because of iOS. Everyone not on iOS hasn't noticed or cared yet. From Google's point of view getting everything switched from Adobe's proprietary plat

Yeah. There is no way Google of all people could launch a Cell Phone OS based on a Java variant and beat Apple by the end of 2010. Stupidest idea ever. I'm still laughing.

Saying what? We hate our users? Do you understand what Google has done with "Flash"? Since 99% of their users WILL have Flash installed anyway Google decided they would make sure their users would have the most up to date version without t

You're comparing two whole system approaches against an individual tool. If you look at the largest SELinux user, RHEL, you find that SELinux is just a single line of defense. The philosophy that "code will always have bugs" is in play and

Yep. Though I think Linux can wipe the tears from its eyes. It can be consoled by the fact its kernel and much of its userspace will be in everything without a Microsoft or Apple logo on it for years to come.

I think oomwriter ( http://www.ommwriter.com/en/ ) is a good demonstration of ambient music and typing sounds. Sadly the editor sucks for coding and I deal with three platforms, not just Mac. I freaking love this little music track from oo

I'm rather confused on why Google Voice isn't tied into Google Apps domains yet. Take Google Voice, add some management tools and say "Hey guys, for the $50/user/year you'd pay for email, docs, etc we can be your PBX too!".

Or you can live it now with Roku. You know, that box that came out from a no-name company two years ago for $99. Netflix instant, Amazon VOD, crapload of other channels. Why wait?

I'm still scratching my head over why everyone else seems to support ePub but Amazon can't be bothered to add it to the Kindle. It's the reason why I went with the nook.

As an Android fan I have to agree. (Although the $150 tablets make me ponder grabbing one and turning them into a fancy alarm clock...) Keep in mind Google doesn't yet license market access or the "Google Experience" to these tablets eithe

Sad to say blacklisting malicious domains to mitigate the damage from e-mail based phishing attacks targeting .edus is something I've had to do in the past. I'm definitely interested in seeing what kind of community develops around this pat

Besides leaked databases and PI tools this is one I learned of in the past month: There are various reverse caller databases floating around. I forget the name of the database but there was a talk at HOPE 2010 less than a month ago about a

It is semi-private data. I hate to say this but phone numbers are not exactly private anymore and anyone with clue and motivation can dig it up for pennies. But a user is justified to feel negative about such data being transmitted. I cou

Ah, sadly nothing for a weekend hacker but nice to know it exists. I'd guess anyone who spent time figuring out how to do Windows filesystems would want to be paid for the trauma. Thanks for the pointer and good luck with the project, I've

"Each AeroFS device has its own 1024bit RSA key pair, which is certified by us to be authentic." That suspiciously reads like the AeroFS people get a copy of your key. If that's the case then it's only marginally more secure than DropBox.

Wasn't Ars the site that was whining at it's readers about how adblocking screws them? It would fit in with their previous complaints.

Chrome and Firefox have a plugin architecture and don't have ad block built-in as shipped. Huge difference there. (On a sidenote I'm still using Firefox over Chrome as Firefox is still the superior adblock platform. ;)

There are still questions to the morality and legality of ad blocking in respect to copyright law I'd imagine. Personally I could give a crap. ;)

When you say "compatibility break" I hear "your 1.5 to 2.1 apps won't run on 2.2" not "2.2's increased performance enables a new class of applications that won't work on phones with an older OS". I'm not seeing the problem here...
