Absolutely agree. I'm reading the book now, and it feels like hundreds of examples to reinforce the same idea over and over again. Granted, she varies the topics (business, parenting, sports, academics, etc..) - but the takeaways are e

I'm not the author of the article, but if I'd have to guess: Data encapsulation, and interface control. If all your clients are talking directly to S3 instead of your encapsulated service interface, you can't inject any busin

I'm a huge fan of Finagle futures, which this project seems to draw a lot of inspiration from. My biggest challenge is actually the fact that Folly as a dependency is so heavyweight memory wise: I have trouble building anything on my l

100% agreed. I've sat down with a few family members and friends who want to understand "investments" and it takes many conversations just to drill into their head that for most average people, boring is good. There are certa

We use thrift for a lot of internal service calls - this seems like it would be a great little library to capture and debug production thrift calls. Would I just need to implement my own PDU class that implements the protocol? Thanks! This

It's usually the stateful stuff that proves challenging in big datacenter moves, but I don't see any mention of data copying, replication, or moving. How did you guys tackle the problems of keeping data in sync and doing a clean c

I'm less interested in Antifragility applied to software development and more towards software systems themselves. After all, if the software isn't antifragile, it doesn't matter what development process you're using. Th

Doesn't it iterate over IPv6 addresses a few lines down? [1]. Sure, it iterates through IPv4 first, but does it make sense to prefer IPv6 given that IPv4 is still the most popular? 1. https://github.com/joyent/node

How do you handle entire datacenter outages with ephemeral only setup? You can replicate to another datacenter, but if power is lost to both do you just accept that you'll have to restore from a snapshotted backup?

More of these "This language sucks" blog posts need to focus on the problem domains actually being solved and less on the aesthetics of the tools. My team uses Scala as one of our primary backend languages and have been extremely

Good job shipping! "Most IT projects fail because of scope-creep, bad estimates and being afraid to ship. Single-developer side-projects are no different." This is dead on. It's too easy to keep adding more stuff once you sta

As far as I know, you still have to read the entire response into memory for parsing. You could write your own streaming parser, but as far as I know the main compiled bindings don't support streaming response handling. I would love to

Thanks for the honest answer. I have no desire to start a flame war. Having an open discussion about costs/tradeoffs between the two seems helpful. Either way it seems worth my time to learn more about C++, so I can make these assessments f

Honest question: Is C++ really worth the complexity over something like C? I'd love to hear people's technology evaluation thought process when choosing C++. To me, C seems far less complicated, while still providing similar levels of perfo
