Yup, we're on 5.3. May have something to do with the relative vs. absolute paths (we use relative), but still... Turns out we didn't need require_once anyway, all but a couple of includes in our entire codebase were in that one area.

The require vs. require_once was a byproduct of this research: I was really interested in __autoload vs. require, as that seems to have fewer numbers online for it.

Appreciate the response Luke (and you creating an HN account just to reply). Having seen investment terms for early-stage startups in CA, Boston, and Pittsburgh, I can say anecdotally that the valley is far ahead in terms of simplicity and

I remember the entrepreneurship course, though I never took it when I was there. I know Barbara has been working hard to spread the mentality, as has Olympus (though I find Olympus to be a less than ideal method). Also, you left GazeHawk o

One thing that's always upset me about CMU is how non-entrepreneurial they are. Google has a large presence there, and most major tech companies fly out for the job fairs, but startups are few and far between (Meebo and Palantir were the c

Thanks, we actually moved to our own office (the old one was at 500startups). We're still in downtown MV but closer to the Caltrain. We still have the ping pong table setup :).

It's funny because that paper and our blog post cite the same Google paper. There's some level of interpretation of data, but some of his cited papers offer strong evidence contrary to his point. From the Jeff Huang paper: The mean Eu

Oh, I meant NS record delegation (I think, terminology might be wrong, it's been a while since I futzed with low-level DNS stuff), so that you could use ns1.mydomain.com as your nameserver, even if you registered mydomain.com through namech

I wouldn't call it a trap: they don't claim renewals are taken at a loss (and I wouldn't expect them to). They charge $10.16/year to renew a .com (including the ICANN fee). Pretty reasonable to me, plus they let you specify your own namese

The point here is customers concerned about security, like the government. It's a good call to make the public aware of the feature for when these big customers are evaluating AWS. Yes, nobody with less than 50 servers will want to even th

They only let you launch 20 EC2 instances unless you request an increase[1]. I assume you need a damn good use case before they're up your limit to 10,000. [1] - http://aws.amazon.com/contact-us/ec2-request/

We just used Wowza, since they had an EC2 instance you could just boot up at a higher cost than a regular EC2 instance. The documentation is ok, not amazing, but getting it running is pretty trivial thanks to their examples.

We stream video: you can use a Flash media server (costs a lot of money), Wowza media server (costs less money), or red5 (open source) to stream. For images you can actually extract a bitmap from a frame of the video, which I imagine you c

We had to look into this: the only way to do it in a cross-browser/OS way is to use Flash. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to write a bare-bones Flash app that just creates JS hooks for all webcam functions (though the permission dialog an

You can truncate the md5 base 62 string to anything you want after that...you're still going to have approximately as much uniqueness as his hash.

Why wouldn't you run MD5 with binary output, then convert the output to base 62? That's ~21 digits in base 62 and doesn't require figuring out your own hashing function.

More interestingly: reddit doesn't minify their CSS. Easy 2kb savings, even with gzipping (I used YUI to minify): 78K reddit.css 68K reddit.min.css 16K reddit.css.gz 14K reddit.min.css.gz
