Just as an aside, using Ruby to access the db server via Net::HTTP should limit the performance to at max a few dozen http requests per second per (Ruby) process. I think the more http is used to bridge web architectures, the more critical

Based on my sporadic use of reddit, short comments are the noisiest form of rot/cancer a in reddit-like engine/interface, such as puns and lame jokes that self-perpetuate into long threads. Perhaps the comment form should have a self-check

Tables probably for cross-browser support with minimal code size. Inline css and javascript for 1 http request instead of 3. Much faster, and less load. The content-length of the google home page is 2752 bytes (gzip).

After going through blueprint and 960.gs, I settled on malo as well. It's dead simple, light, stable, and can be learned in 2 minutes. Its only gotcha is to adjust the negative margin value for IE6 if you change your default font-size. You

World map showing it as percentage of population: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f7/Internet_... Still doesn't take into account urban/rural split. Urban China should be much higher, for example.

"The best e-mail program ever"? Hardly. "One of the least shitty of the bunch" is probably more appropriate. Gmail easily beats the old-school bunch, but the quantum leap of email is definitely still ahead of us.

Essentially, you get a hash consisting of key/value pairs, where the keys may have a format such that "key[subkey][subsubkey]" => "some_value" is parsed into {"key" => {"subkey" => {"subsubkey" => "some_value"

This issue also concerns studies with non-results in all scientific fields. The pressure to produce "results" causes two types of problems: 1. Massive fudging of data to achieve (statistical) significance. 2. Inefficiencies due to researche
