I just bought an old dell server and started self-hosting. It saved me some money on a VPS and Dropbox (although this thing GOBBLES electricity, so the savings argument is pretty moot). Docker (or podman in my case) makes this extremely eas

I had a lovely accidental talk with Felice Jacka who I later figured out was one of the top guys out there in the field of nutritional psychology. I might not be the right guy to summarize what she said, but iirc it boiled down to eating mi

Gerrymandering is used to subvert democracy in the US. By both sides. The republicans have been trying to dissuade a lot of voters which to me, as a rather left (European left) leaning European seems very undemocratic.

As long as it is not confuseable it is not trademark infringement. You are free to start a Pharmacy named McDonalds, but not Walmart's Pharma.

Not to say that I agree with the transparent, but: Trademarks only apply where there might be confusion. If I made a very large radioactive ape called Gozilla, it would most certainly infringe on a (hypothetical?) Godzilla trademark. But as

Related: i was under the impression that AES was safe (even aes-128). If it is so, why did Apple go for full pqc and not just the key exchange? Would it be a good idea for signal to double the key size?

You can't write any music accurately. Ask her if she can write a later Miles Davis solo accurately so that anybody can perform it just as he plays it :) I work in a much more notation-bound genre (I am an orchestra bassoon player) and

They use it for key exchange. That removes the part that quantum computing will break easily. AES is still safe. It is a replacement for public key crypto schemes, like Ed25519.

there is quite a heated argument in the NIST comments regarding kyber. DJB is not impressed with how they calculated some kind of security bound. The kyber folks (and maybe some others) seem to think DJB is a prick. This is so far above my

I am not sure if I understand things correctly, but what apple did seems like a lot of work for little benefit. Symmetric encryption is not threatened nearly as much by quantum computers. Using a PQ key exchange should make adequately safe

I tested matrix in 2021 and found the experience pretty darn awful outside the main client. And by a cursory glance the ecosystem is still pretty much controlled by the matrix.org folks. When I was using it there was a lot of accusations th

I don't think any sane person would use mutable strings considering the benefits you get by having an immutable string type by default. I have always said that if I were to make my own scheme (my language of choice) I the mutability of

Sometimes I feel I am the only person in the world who likes XML. It just followed the trajectory of all formats, where it is used in places it shouldn't have been used. It is moderately readable and writable, and the tooling is great.

While I don't contest the story about software bugs, the Gripen airplane had pretty bad PR for quite some time due to 2 (3 depending on how you count) high-profile crashes. It is fun to see it mentioned in other contexts.
