I thought about a similar solution about a year ago, but mine involved embedding small spring loaded pins into the front, back and sides of phone that would pop up when the phone was dropped.

I wasn't aware of this. So they launched 1.5 million balloons to set a Guinness World Record only to have Guinness not recognize the record and have 60% of the balloons fall into the river and eventually make their way to Canada. Crazy

This is my experience also. People not fluent with Gradle or just don't want to invest the necessary time in learning how it works just cut and paste stuff into it and wonder why it doesn't work anymore.

I would say Google has always taken the security on the Pixel very seriously. It's also the reason why the Pixel phone was unhackable at Pwn2Own 2017 while the Chinese teams had their way with the iPhone.
