I envy people without kids sometimes. A "me day" is just not in the realm of possibly when you have kids. A "me hour" maybe, or when your kids go to daycare even a "me 3 hours", but not a day. Eventually I hear

I agree with this one. I have a niche open source project (ntfy) that is somewhat popular in its space, and my promotion so far has been almost exclusively in the r/selfhosted subreddit. It is very very tricky to find a subreddit that

That's awesome. I love seeing UnifiedPush thrive. It's come a long way. But there is still a long road ahead. Disclaimer: I am the maintainer of ntfy, a UnifiedPush distributor.

This was exactly my thought. Right now we are in the early stages of awesomeness. Similar to the early days of Google, with Google News and Images and without all the abuse and spammers. Once the politicians see it as a threat because of it

log-store [1] is pretty neat. Thanks for making it. It's super powerful and easy to use. There's a learning curve with the query language, but it's super cool once you figure it out. [1] https://log-store.com/

I have been working and running ntfy [1] on my phone for a year now (ntfy is a UnifiedPush distributor), and it is true that Android does kill the app every now and then. But it is instantly restarted. Usually ntfy delivers notifications mu

It's really not that bad. It uses 1% of battery for 17h. Sometimes even less than that and it shows 0% after the entire day. So it's a hypothetical problem IMHO. There are very few cases or phones i see these days where people com

I mean yes, but if Google catches you, you're not going to have a good time. It's also incredibly inconvenient. Also, you cannot specify the exact time when it's supposed to run, so it's likely they will just run at the

Please be nice. You can convey your information without the snarky tone. You may be factually correct, but your comment comes across quite rude. From the HN guidelines [1]: > Be kind. Don't be snarky. Have curious conversation; don&

ntfy [1] would work for you entirely in the LAN, if you self-host the server and the phones are connected to the same Wifi. It'll only work for Android phones though, since iOS forces APNS for push notifications. ntfy is also a distrib

There's a detailed description here: https://ntfy.sh/docs/config/#access-control Though this doesn't work for the public server obviously. The public server doesn't support setting ACLs by users.

Yes, subscribing requires connected clients to keep a connection open. I've tested this with many many thousand sockets and it seems to scale so far. Additionally I limit the number of subscriptions per IP address. So far so good.

Maybe https://github.com/dgtlmoon/changedetection.io ? It has Apprise support, so you can use ntfy through that AFAIK.

No. There are ACLs to protect them, see https://ntfy.sh/docs/config/#access-control But for all other topics, yes. Knowing the topic means you can publish to it.

Thanks. I'll keep an eye on it. I have a lot of rate limiting in place, but for static resources it could probably be tighter.

No real lessons learned. I like Go, and I like that it lets me do no-fuzz-straight-to-the-point development. The single Go binary and server is handling the traffic just fine, and the architecture is simple and easy to extend. I am sufferin
