Google does make a ton of money from ads and tracking, but how do they not "sell software and media" too? They sell apps and media in the same manner that Apple does.

It doesn't need to be an emulator. It would more likely be a compatibility layer, like Alien Dalvik or Wine.

I'd be happy for Android to lose some ground to competitors such as Windows, Sailfish, Tizen, a hypothetical Amazon OS, or almost anything else. While I appreciate the usable non-Google Android stack, the duopoly has gone too far, and

A fork of Android would probably be most successful in China where they don't rely on Google apps and services. I don't think there's much of a market for Android without Google outside of China. I'm curious how long Goo

If the key is managed by the OS but is inaccessible to the user, the concept would seem to be incompatible with free software operating systems. Also, if the camera app can have anything it "makes" approved, the app itself could t

I'd rather non-Chrome browsers such as Firefox and Safari keep some market share so we don't end up with too many "Only works in Chrome" webistes.

In my opinion, Thinkpads have always held the #1 spot in the keyboard category, over Apple and others. Apple does have arguably the best trackpad, but the Trackpoint wins out for me. I wouldn't want a laptop without one.

Yeah, so it's a step up from the 6 overall.

I also found it ridiculous how he says users are better off without 3D Touch. IIRC, some functionality can only be accessed through it, so certain features have no way of working on the SE or XR.

Most OLEDs use the PenTile layout, which means that each logical "pixel" only consists of 1¼ subpixels, whereas in RGB panels every logical pixel is always three subpixels. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PenTil

They've generally kept older models around, haven't they? The 7 is nearly identical to the 8 and didn't get discontinued last year.

Technically, isn't that an upgrade, or at the very least a sidegrade? The SE is newer and has better specs in most areas.

I agree, the RGB subpixel layout really gives better sharpness over PenTile at the same nominal PPI. I'm sticking with LCD phones as I really don't want to have to worry about burn-in, especially with several years of use.

I often see sticklers for the "official" Apple terminology fighting losing battles on forums and comment sections trying to tell everyone to pronounce it "iPhone Ten" rather than "iPhone eX". Also, I think Appl

I used a Moto G 2015 until earlier this year. With Firefox and uBlock Origin, browsing didn't seem slow to me at all. I browse a lot of sites but not a lot of webapps. I used native apps (Slide and Materialistic) for this site and for

Most phone verifications that I've seen do work with a landline. They call you and a text-to-speech bot reads you a code.

Last I heard, you can't download any apps without signing in with an Apple ID. Since sideloading is impractical on iOS, this would make the phone not very useful as you can't install any software.

Many services that require phone numbers can tell if a number is a free VOIP number and will not accept it for verification.

On desktop I use an extension that redirects any AMP page (I don't come across them often, but people share links) to the canonical page. It would most likely be possible to install it in Firefox mobile too. I also have all amp-related

I get that this is a joke, but I also can't wait for AMP in its current form to die. Relatively lightweight pages = good… centralizing the web under Google's control = bad.

Sites like APKMirror aren't pirate sites, as they only host APKs that are free of charge. Also, if you're using Android without Play Services but still want to download Play Store apps, you can use the "Yalp Store" app f

If the mobile apps have this shady botnet stuff in them, why would the macOS app be assumed safe? I wouldn't trust it either. I'd stick to using a trustworthy VPN client program that's not affiliated with the VPN provider.

I do like LXQt, MATE, and Xfce as well. Cinnamon's okay. Xfce does hit a sweet spot of usability and is quite a nice environment in general, but it does seem to be falling behind in development. Last time I checked, most of it is still

Ehh, Deepin is way too trendy-looking and visually borrows a lot from Win10 and macOS. Not to mention being ridiculously heavy. Give me KDE Plasma any day.

No way would they risk the backlash of taking this down. It wouldn't come close to taking 1% of VS Code non-libre downloads, and as the source code is free software, there is zero legal reason for MS to take it down.
