That's not really apples to apples though. Gmail worked with external SMTP services to send and receive mail. Google+ required that anyone you wanted to connect to also have been offered and accepted an invite (or received one of your

They usually couch it in weasel words such as "we have no plans to conduct layoffs at this time" rather than an outright lie.

I'm comparing the costs of hiring a new employee versus offering a raise. The assumption is that most people will leave if they get an offer that includes a 15% raise rather than stay and only get 3%.

In my experience someone job hopping every 6 months isn't usually doing so because they've found a better role or better compensation. That's usually, but not always, a result of under performance. Most companies are reluctan

IANAL, but how are Instagram and WhatsApp allowed to operate in Iran? Do embargoes not apply to online services? I'd love to see companies such as Google and Apple implement optional mesh networking as an over-the-air update to their p

I'd bet that areas with the most stringent parking enforcement also have the highest stolen vehicle recovery rates. That seems more likely to me than the police actively seeking out and finding stolen vehicles.

That's interesting. My 66 coupe definitely had Ford branded lap belts complete with the Mustang logo on the button.

Some very good points made in this article but also so many cringey takes. The author is an engineer but compares the user to server ratio at Twitter to Netflix. Those services are so very different and have such vastly different hardware,

You're right that having security report to engineering is not unusual. It's also not a great idea due to conflicts of interest, but not unusual.

Not to defend Twitter because their lack of oversight and security controls around who can access what sounds completely inadequate and borderline criminal... but comparing any company to Google is unfair. Very, very few companies have the

Perhaps, but also consider that they are only in this position because Google uses their search monopoly to fund development of a free alternative... much like Microsoft used their desktop OS monopoly to do the same in the 90s.

I agree with everything you said, but I'd like to play devil's advocate here. Mudge has worked: * L0pht / @stake: security research, red teaming, and source code auditing, IIRC. * BBN: research. * NFR: technical advis

It reminds me of cell phone interfaces back before the iPhone. I had high hopes that Carplay would motivate the vendors to put some effort into their own interfaces but sadly that doesn't appear to have happened.

I used to go see Carlin perform every August in Vegas. He was almost always working on new stuff and carrying a clipboard around with various jokes. It was really interesting to then watch his specials and see how the material developed.
