Whether they'll do it isn't the point. If a patent is, by its nature, meant to restrict user and citizen freedom, why have it? If your neighbor collects guns, that may be no cause for alarm; hunting is a legitimate activity. But if your nei

One comment I found interesting: "And I didn’t check the source [of OpenBSD] for trojans or backdoors. Do I trust Theo DeRaadt that much? Not particularly, though I have nothing against him. Do I trust “the community”? No. Mostly I just did

Neither Crockford nor Sullivan is a role model for me, and I'm not following blindly. I'm merely observing that Sullivan successfully refactored the CSS on Facebook and got them onto a better development path. That's pretty hard. I'm not go

...neither of which is really the point. Even if they both gave you free hardware, you've got to learn their technology stack just to try it out. Unlike, say, web development, where a few seconds of text editing gives you a "hello world" th

I know some of the things that SASS gets you, but I'm curious: how DRY and light is your generated CSS? Anecdotally, the designer where I work uses SASS, but in our last iteration of our web app, his compiled stylesheet was something like 1

"the id thing is just bs." By no means am I a CSS expert, but I'd hesitate to call someone's ideas "bs" if that person has the kind of experience Sullivan has. I may not like all of Douglas Crockford's suggestions in JSLint, but you know wh

Of course, the absolute extreme of reusable classes would be if each class applied exactly one CSS rule. Then you could mix and match them in any possible way, at the cost of having 18 classes per element. But no one would do that. You don'

I agree with you about planning, but "test driven development" isn't haphazard; it's not just clicking around to see what happens. It's a way of formally specifying your design that simultaneously confirms that your code does what it should

When the person in picture #3 makes that sign, it is described as the "victory sign." I imagine that's what the guy holding the rockets meant, too.

I understand your sentiment, but imagine the process of choosing a very risky treatment. You sign a form saying "For reals, I know this may kill me, but I'm not going to sue you unless you do something crazy like jam a fork in my head durin

I started programming in web development about 4 years ago: first HTML and CSS, then adding Javascript and AJAX, then PHP, then Ruby and Rails. In the process I learned a fair amount about MySQL and I can do the most basic Unix server admin

Using the state_machine gem in one of our Rails apps, which tracks a workflow where items can be received, entered, reviewed, rejected, etc, helped me think through the business process and map that to our code. We also logged all the chang

There are more than 6000 lines of CSS behind this, but only the first 500 or so are actual CSS; the rest appears to be images encoded into text. At any rate, this is very impressive and interesting. I would have sworn it was a Flash game if

Yes. Welcome to web development. :) Snarkiness aside, I feel the pain behind your complaint. That's one reason I think CSS can be harder than actual programming: you have all these unknowns and contingencies to manage.
