PHP has always had PEAR, but it isn't all that great. Composer[1] is a relatively new dependency manager for PHP that's been getting a lot of love lately though. It's very similar to Node's npm. [1] http://getcomposer.org/

I too have experienced frustration at a lot of what the author gripes about here. Most of them aren't specific to Rails, but there's enough that are to make it overwhelming for newcomers. The barrier to entry has become rather high.

Steam at least offers an offline mode. You're not locked out of your games if your cable modem breaks.

Chrome seems to be detecting TechCrunch as malware right now. Anyone else getting this problem?

Yeah, I kind of wish they left in a default as well. Still, it's not that difficult to include one.

Since Laravel 4 is Composer based, these have been extracted away. There are ports of the old HTML and Form helpers from Laravel 3, as well as a new package built with Laravel 4 support in mind. See this for more details: https://github.c

Awesome. I was waiting on documentation before trying this out. I love that they're using Composer now.

This was an incredibly helpful article. Tom Ryder's written a lot of other blog posts that were really insightful and enlightening as well. I even learned how to use ed from him.

It works fine for me. Seems like whatever install of Vim you have doesn't support the clipboard. Run "vim --version | grep clipboard" and see if you get a + or - for the clipboard. If you want a quick fix for getting it working again, make

Thanks for this. When I was first getting into programming, people would tell me and others like myself to "go contribute to open source projects". I don't think they realized just how daunting and impossible that seemed to us at the time.

While I certainly wouldn't recommend this kind of article to most people, I wish professors from Computer Science departments would try to add just a little styling. It's painful to go through most of their sites.

Thanks guys. I agree, it was a blast. Hopefully we'll all be seeing each other at other hackathons in the future.

Thanks! That's sound advice. We don't plan on adding more features than necessary. A user system with sharing and persistence of poems should be sufficient.

This is something we didn't get to at the hackathon. I agree that this is a feature that needs to be there. We plan on implementing a user system where people can save their poems and choose whether they're private or public. We don't reall

1.) Yeah, there're still some bugs that we need to work out. We also need to come up with a more scalable solution of finding rhymes if we go commercial. 2.) Yeah, you're right. We just wanted something that would look good on the projector

It makes sense that you're analyzing only the first 100, but it would probably be cool to add the raw quantities of these things as a metric. Perhaps they shouldn't count towards the score, but it would be cool to display them, and the info

It's definitely fun to mess around with. Nicely, done! Quick question: why do repo and gist counts cap at 100? I haven't looked at Github's API myself yet, so there might be a technical limitation here that I'm unaware of.

I write a lot of code on whiteboards or paper as well, but I could not bear to part with syntax highlighting. When you're off the machine, a missing quote or semi-color won't cause the whole thing to come crashing down. The same can't be sa

It's his font choice. I don't agree with it either, but at least it's intentional. Edit: Perhaps not. The font looks better on the link provided in the sibling comment.

None of the examples presented were that bad. However, things can get pretty hairy when you start requiring CommonJS modules and have callbacks being passed to functions in different files.
