I think you need to be careful just calling Omaha out. Omaha is not as liberal as SF, but your comment implies it is homophobic/racist/sexist breeding ground. I have not found that to be the case.

I haven't used facebook much for years now. Twitter might be next because while I like its ability to keep me up on many interests, the "lets take complicated issues and turn them into one liners" thing is souring me.

This feature should be talked about more. I love being able to supplement the service's catalog with music I own.

I agree. I'm kind of a coffee snob too, but my coffee expenses went down considerably when I started cold brewing versus hot brewing. Not only can you use a less expensive bean, but you can often use less beans overall.

You can experiment with grind, brewing time, and water temperature. I drink a lot of coffee that is "cold brewed" with warm to hot tap water for shorter times, then filtered and heated up (I like cold brewed flavor, not cold coff

Oh man, I haven't thought about Future Crew in a long time. Brings back fond memories.

Yeah, I hate how the unemployment number is always so lazily used by media outlets. In contrast the employment rate (60.2%) is currently lower than it was from 1986 until 2008.

Kind of off topic, but I can't recommend Quantum Leaps (www.state-machine.com) enough for microcontroller development. Also, the book by Miro Samek (quantum leaps founder) is very good. I've had a really good experience using hi

Really good stuff. The GUI is often where the ease of reasoning breaks down and I'm glad to see work like this trying to change that.

Personally this is interesting to see after I just recently tried to learn a little Scala to see if I could realize the promise of a fluid front-end to to back-end experience between Scala and Scala.js. I eventually gave up in defeat becau

Just my two cents, but you asked for it. I give all young engineers the same basic advice "Follow your gut". If you are religious, pray about it. If not, meditate about it. Either way, the answer will probably be screaming at

I'm always surprised how hard it is to get artificially sweetened yogurt. I know of only one brand at only one chain of grocery store in my area. It seems like a natural combination.

This isn't as cut and dry as you might think. Should the US govt. pay full development cost for all software it contracts out? Contractors often take less NRE than makes sense if they can make a business case for said software elsewh

Very nice. This kind of thing has been on my vaporware todo list for a while. I'm glad someone just did it. I really like your frame builder concept.

Wow! Glen Greenwald put into words (much better than I could of course) some of the thoughts that ran through my head when the AP story showed up on my twitter feed. The timing really made it smell like an attempt to pull the rug out from

Sometimes HN reads my mind. I was just thinking this morning "I wonder if something more lightweight than Bootstrap/foundation/MDL would be more what I'm looking for."

+1 for dspguide.com. It really made what had been an opaque subject for me very approachable.

I'm surprised this isn't discussed more. Going publicly is often a red flag to me. Certainly there is a time and place for it, but often the big cash influx is used to buy into loosely related markets (often at a hefty premium),

Just a general comment, but in my opinion IPython/Jupyter is worth learning Python for. It is such a great platform for tinkering with data or really any idea you might play with in code.
