GTK 3 worked pretty well for a side project on Linux and macOS. I like C, so I went with GTK as opposed to C++ with Qt. I suspect that Qt is a slightly better (both look and dev ergonomics) and more portable solution, but not sure.

Linux works great on X1 Carbons, not so much on new Apple machines. Keep the X1 if you care about that. Also the next gen Carbons are supposed to have a 16:10 screen.

Chronologically, The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides makes most sense. It's a shift from the Greek-Persian conflict to Athens vs. Sparta. You can read Plutarch's Lives in parallel (no pun intended), it's pu

This sort of news is always like a splash of cold water to the face to me. I haven't produced any breakthrough research as an undergraduate. Have I accomplished enough? Am I too complacent? Should I be doing more, working more, studyin

Yeah, it's like saying "well all Apple is doing is throwing good engineering at the problem". All they've really done is taken an advanced process, coupled it with a powerful architecture they've been iteratively im

See the upward dent in the weekly cycle starting in mid March of 2020. The cycle exists because your home ISP is more likely to use IPv6 over the corporate/work provider. So there's a spike on the weekends. WFH measures have conse

This would be much more interesting if the features weren't anonymized. At this point this is just a widest/deepest neural net competition on some unknown bunch of features.

Don't worry about tabulation, you got the content right. The slide deck is a PR piece aimed at tricking people into giving more of their lives to corporate interests.

Is this cross compilation to x86 or a native compile to Arm? That could be playing an important role if it's easier to optimize and emit code for one architecture versus the other.

Many computer architectures struggle with arithmetic vs. memory performance. A typical CPU can do a lot of computation per unit of time, but ends up starved because of low memory bandwidth. I hope that we see either an existing fast memory

What is the best way to download this dataset? Last time I messed with it I had to pay for a Google Cloud bucket and run through some awkward sequence of steps to eventually get a local copy. I think I ended up following the advice here: h

I wonder if M1 dominates an i9-9980HK at multithreaded workloads that make full use of available SIMD? Does an M1 dominate at peak theoretical flops?
