I was mostly responding to the "but they can't be spent either" part. From my perspective there isn't that much difference if a company is doing a buyback vs a dividend, as long as it's sharing its profits with the

Just set up your own charity that pays for your charity-related travel - it's not your fault that the charity focuses on work in a region where you happen to have a summer home. ;- )

My understanding is that you can play tricks with stocks so that you don't really need to realize the gains to benefit from them. They can be used as collateral for loans, directly donated to charities (lowers down your tax bill w/

I'd hope they do follow some procedures. The problem that those procedures may be lax / subjective / easy to work around is a whole other matter...

Yeah, but they need to follow some procedures to lock you up, so similarly they probably should have to follow some procedures (like getting a warrant) before surveiling you for extended period?

I think the part that I don't understand is how you can say that you understand it but then follow up with something that seems like a lack of understanding. : ) Yes, we know it doesn't make sense to be stressed about it, and yet

You do realize that emotions are by definition not something you can easily reason yourself out of? Not everyone reacts the same way, good for you that you can approach it "in cold blood", so to say.

Huh, I think my brain is not wired to think about `x` as a storage, it is closer to "add 3 to x for x = 2", which then gets reduced to "add 3 to 2" and then the destination is missing...

But English "add 4 to x" tells you nothing about where to store the result. : - ) "Add 4 to x and store result in x" vs "Let x be x + 4"?

I think the main problem is the lack of intuition of what "1 Gini means", except the "lower is better". Is difference between coefficient of 10 & 11 the same as difference between 30 and 31? The poster to which I res

I would probably not classify Poland as small, especially noting how big of a population drop between Poland and Romania is. And if Poland were a US state, it would rank 2nd in terms of population, sightly over 1 million people less than Ca

Agreed, this is actually pretty scary for me (living in the US for a decade now) - bankruptcy is potentially one accident away (especially if it takes away the ability to continue doing the high-paying job).

Some metrics aren't linear so w/o knowing more about Gini coefficient, my first thought is "I have no idea if the difference is significant or not". Can someone ELI5 this so that I can build an intuition for what "1

Rapid vaccine development does indeed give some cause for optimism. Some counters that I'd have to that would be a potential resurgence of polio in the US [1] and the appearance of drug-resistant pathogens (typhoid fever in this case)
