Be careful what you wish for. There are pretty well established guidelines for determining the "obviousness" of a patent, and one of these (as you mention) is determining whether the patent would be obvious to one with an ordinary level o

Recommendation to you: Just put the code up on github and share that instead. It's static, so you can even host it on a github page. Write a readme that makes it obvious that this is just a technology demo and not a for-real online passw

Couldn't this just be considered jury nullification? IANAL, but I don't think the responses in voir dire (especially to follow the instructions of the judge or the letter of the law) are any kind of binding promise. Won't the appeals judge

You could probably expect to get a C&D letter from NY State for designing a logo like that. At least, plenty of other people have. Google for "i heart nyc trademark infringement" and read the top few links. Apparently they have sent

Yes, actually NYC (well, NY State Dept. of Economic Development) constantly goes after people for infringement of the "I heart NY" logo. They definitely do follow through. It's not about money being made, it's a legal necessity that a tr

Government entities can and often do own intellectual property - patents, trademarks, copyrights - and regularly defend them. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Love_New_York for one famous example.

I like the idea of "f.lux for my house". Might improve my sleeping. This part of the project is potentially life-altering . Lots of people in the comments are getting hung up on the "control your lights over wifi" aspect of this project,

You will probably need to look outside work for meaningful challenges and deeper inspiration. My serious suggestion to you is to take on a big goal that has nothing to do with your job, like say, run a marathon or something.

Wow, what industry? Healthcare? Telecom? Can't think of too many that could credibly claim a $1B exit.

I upvoted it because I like "long meandering human interest pieces". I thought it was fascinating the extent to which a pathological liar will go to maintain such an elaborate false identity. I shared the article with a few other non-HN pe

Intellectual property law isn't nonsense. It evolved over hundreds of years (and continues to do so) from other areas of property law in the common law system.

This is offtopic, but I'm curious, how did you hear about Hacker News? I'm curious what makes new users want to participate here.

For Android, I use the Chainfire 3D driver + CF.lumen plugin. You need to have root though.

What projects are you working on now? If you're still stuck with a long commute and you are looking for something to build, you could try your hand at a Hacker News replacement. There are certainly enough people here jaded by the toxicity

Believe it or not, most Kindle books are lendable. I have a database of Kindle books that I built last year, but I know that now there are over a million titles. So, year old data: > db.books.find({'lendable': true}).count(); 5

Sorry to say it sounds like it's basically over. You can't fix things if you are cofounders that don't communicate or respect each other. Get out as quickly and painlessly as you can. What does he need a lawyer for? You have no agreements,

FWIW, I ran a site last year very similar to LendInk, and was told by Amazon to make changes that they wanted within 48 hours or they would close my Associates account and Product Advertising API access. They do keep the Kindle lending clu

Yes, I know that Amazon didn't shut them down, a bunch of C&D letters from authors did. My only point was that Amazon does not support people who run these ebook lending sites, and I don't think there's much of a future in it.

Amazon is not stupid. If your business depends on their affiliate program or API, and they don't want you doing whatever it is that you are doing, they will cut you off.

No surprise here. I made a site last year that did almost the same thing as LendInk, but I decided to shut it down after Amazon made it very clear that they didn't want me doing that. From what I understand, there were a half dozen or so o
