On the other hand... OCR is meanwhile so good that it can be used for many PDF text extraction projects. So often there is no longer the need to bother with PDF internals, just screenshot the PDF document and parse it. A free pdf ocr servi

Is this dedicated receipt OCR significantly better then the out-of-the box OCR you get from Google Cloud Vision, Abbyy or OCR.space? As standard OCR gets better and better, the room for specialized OCR solutions is becoming smaller.

Tesseract needs text on a white background to work well out of the box. For "text on images" try for example https://ocr.space/ocrapi

Tesseract is optimized for images with white backgrounds. ID cards or movie screenshots do not work well.
