Of course. Its like android phones vs. ios. Initially, the competition was pretty non-existent, but over time android phones have become a much greater competitor - of course the same will happen to tablet market.

at that point I'm going to really make changes at a code level - unless I need to get the changes approved or understood by others (which is why I'd show them some new mockups/screens). Iterations can be done so much faster working directly

as someone who does both, but is primarily a UI/UX guy. I'll design the interfaces first. Then I'll design the database, then start developing. Everything seems to fall into place that way for me.

I like rbanffy's suggestion for google docs, but otherwise I'd go with joomla. Or you could search for something open source which is for project management. Drupal is nice, buts its heavy to use for something so small.

A free trial is definitely the smart move - it couldn't possibly take away potential customers unless your product is garbage.

Release now, get some friends to start using it. Get feedback as you work on new features. Iterate, iterate, iterate. People don't mind using an incomplete service as long as they know its being built upon - it also helps build evangelists.
