This is whats so powerful and wonderful about it, your end result isn't simply based on the direct dependents, but also includes the build chain for all things. That's just not that common in other build tools.

I used this exact idea to do not just containers but cross compiled containers with cached artifacts using cachix, https://github.com/openenergysolutions/openfmb.adapters for a size-able example perhaps

Motorola is maybe a telling of how complacency and pure business leadership can lead to a downfall. They became complacent, they abandoned their technical leadership for bean counters, and became dust. Intel was almost going down that road.

Heh I just ran into an issue the other day with a coworker where Ubuntu had a patched kernel auto update and break everything. Yep, it’s a sand castle

Safari is perfectly fine. Chrome being a dominant web browser engine is the new issue at hand. Firefox and safari are seemingly second class at best now. It doesn’t help that google themselves only seem to test with chrome. Meets on Linux i

Imagine the US doing this one day, after the rest of the world has made the tech and manufacturing. Sucks we can’t agree in politics this is a win.

flatpak/snap have serious downsides and nix does a much better job of package management. The sandbox aspect is interesting but in practice it’s so far shown to break things in my experience

I love nix if only because for a given project apt/yum/pacman updating my host won’t break things, the environment is replicable easily, and cross compile environments are a breeze. It’s like pythons virtualenv on steroids and it’

Questions that aren’t being answered by the NTIA pushing this. Why would a vendor do this and become liable for all inclusive software? The build chain isn’t required to be part of the BOM so any trojaned tool in the build environment may p

Kubernetes is already insanely complicated. In practice minor version differences of anything in the stack leads to issues. I get why it all exists but at some point I have to ask, are containers really that much better than an rpm/d

Rust is arguably simpler than C++ to comprehend, and sure, more complex than simple C. But the complexity argument is overblown.

Meanwhile a large C++ code base I maintain broke on a minor GCC version bump. My Rust 1.0 code on the other hand has compiled just fine since the dawn of stable rust. The only really stable languages might be C89, C99, some fortran, and Cob

I found when breaking out a bga package the constraints started acting poorly in either dog bone or via in pad in terms of spacing. As in, the board house specs were set and should have been ok, but kicad wouldn't allow traces or vias

Basically kicad is great, until you need huge BGA packages, high speed bus traces, or DDR with its insane number of address/data lines that require some RF like thinking in design. The only real other option is Altium these days, which

Nix has saner repeatable dev envs, and makes updating or adding deps a snap. Can be used to build scratch containers. Can be used to cross compile. The only major downside is it requires learning and understanding nix which I get is a hurdl

One metric might be how long it takes a developer to build it from scratch given all the esoteric builds in C/C++ land. Another might be lines per cve in a given language. Another still might be time to fix cves per language. I'm

I hope they sort out GCC for easier and better cross compiler setup. Would be a huge step to removing one of the rough spots for targeting embedded systems.

I hit the 100kloc size project in Go, the lack of generics and the never ending nested if err != nil lines were a huge part of that. It wore on myself and my team, and was certainly not helpful for the rsi I was experiencing. 10kloc is pret
