The amount of entropy is usually limited. For the lottery, it doesn't seem like it would be a problem, but in general, you don't want your function calls to block while gathering "random data"

This used to be a reliable workaround to "web nannies" or corporate filters as well.

That paragraph stuck out to me too.. it makes no sense. They say it is refined capitalism but also nothing of value is being traded. Isn't capital supposed to have value? That's refined snake oil.

> However, there does seem to be a sweet spot in the elo gain rate where a large portion of the players who have gained the most elo per month seem to cluster around 100-300 games per month, which comes out to a handful of games per day.

Literally the first line from wikipedia is: > A conspiracy theory is an explanation for an event or situation that invokes a conspiracy

I get the derogatory nature of the term, but both of your examples include groups of people keeping information from the rest of us. I'm curious if you have an example of a derogatory conspiracy theory that doesn't have a literal

If it is man-made, and they are keeping that from us, then it is a conspiracy. Therefore, conspiracy theory. It's not because it us "against the norm", it is because the theory itself clearly involves a conspiracy.

I don't disagree necessarily, but humans seems capable of solving problems even when when they are poorly defined by understanding the some implicit context. Sure if we encode all the context, the computer can solve it too, but isn

The question remains in earnest, how did you differentiate between the ego and soul without begging the question?

Hmm... Yes. But I can't make a cogent argument why lol. 13 year club here, the Reddit I think of is probably not aligned with what Reddit thinks of itself anymore.

Would you say ALL forums are social media? Consider that we have commenters in here saying they don't use social media... So... Kinda, but certainly not in everyone's mind apparently. I feel some je ne sais quoi about the terminol

Mind sharing why? Is it the features or something else? When I think back 20 years to forums, HN feels most like those to me. It feels nothing like what most people call "social media"

Isn't it a forum? It doesn't have friends, following, asking for your contacts, etc. I guess the line is subjective, this is just a plain old forum, managed very well, imo.

Reminds me of Rich Hickey's talk on "simple vs easy". Wordpress is easy, but not simple if you really want to grok it.

I totally disagree. If it is a comment on diversity, it might be sarcastic or unprofessional, but that doesn't make it just as offensive. Saying all minorities look the same reveals ignorance and biases, which is the offensive part, no

I also found it kinda funny. And even more so that the cop is playing Sublime, and had to skip right past "April 29, 1992 (Miami)" (a song about participating in the Rodney King riots) to get to Santeria, assuming he has the album

"Consequences" sure does imply causation, but this doesn't say that. It says "linked to negative life outcomes" which sounds a lot more like correlation to me.

The article is about DRY, but it opens talking about clean code. IMO, "clean" is a poor word to use when evaluating code quality, not because there is no clean code like the author says, but because clean is an undefined subjectiv
