I hope this is a joke: the std::weak_ptr / std::shared_ptr combo (only non-reference alternative I can think of other than std::optional) can have pretty bad performance implications due to ref-counting atomics in multi-threaded scenar

Are Rust ref-counts atomic? (I'd assume so). Atomic ref-counts can actually have a surprising amount of overhead in many multithreaded scenarios, so much so that going back to raw pointers over shared pointers in C++ for some use cases

Full sleep state is currently a bit of an issue apparently: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/X1-Carbon-Gen-... There are work-arounds by building IASL with a patch to restore S3 state.

Yes, but even when throttled, it can often be faster than full-clock less wide instructions, if your workload allows for it. So it's sometimes worth it and there is a benefit.

For well-optimised floating point calculations, this is generally true (even taking into account the SMT capabilities of Power8). Intel also has 8-wide (and more) SIMD in terms of intrinsics (AVX/AVX512), whilst Power is still limited

OpenGL doesn't do raytracing where you have a ray origin and direction though, so you wouldn't have seen it there. Using the full terms or shortening them to Dir and Orig are more conventional in my experience. It gets even more f

While cool, it should be pointed out that this way of ordering things doesn't really scale with scene complexity (more objects, more complex triangular meshes requiring acceleration structures) or image size, as the number of masks req

Keep in mind AMD and Intel measure TDP differently - AMD give average for a particular workflow / scenario, and Intel give absolute maximum, so you can't compare them apples-to-apples.

Exactly - C++ compilers definitely can do this, and it's one of the things ICC's noticeably better than GCC and LLVM at, especially where intrinsics are involved. If you have a struct/class type union wrapper for SIMD instr

GCC produces almost 30% more instructions for the C version at -O3 level as opposed to -O2. Clang produces practically the same between the two levels. On OS X, so can't test if this actually makes a performance difference.

Pointer size doubles, so any data structure (linked list, tree, etc, etc) which uses raw pointers directly will need more memory to store the same items. Normal way of negating this increase is to use uint32_t offset items into a master arr
