One person isn’t going to come remotely close to fixing this. I work for AWS/Azure/GCP and can tell you first hand that billing is an insanely hard problem to solve. It’s all done in batch by the service itself and pushed to a cen

Do you say this because you think some hacker can gain access to the VMs where your data is stored? It’s significantly more likely that this will happen due to one of your engineers getting social engineered. While we don’t know the details

Sure but it’s likely significantly more work to set up the private connectivity to the VPC. Makes sense to release to some customers IMO.

Much less than the amount from deals with strategic partners. The long tail of $5 a month from forgotten VMs is likely orders of magnitude less than the handshake deals you can publically read about.

I work in this space and you’re absolutely correct. Your last paragraph hits the nail on the head for pretty much every complain people have about the public clouds.

And when are self driving cars going to start driving themselves around and pick people up? Certainly not within 5 years.

Much like Detroit and Cleveland, the Toledo suburbs are quite affluent even though the city itself is on hard times. Very cool to see my hometown on HN :D

Late to the post, but if anyone wants a good primer on Materialize (beyond what their actual engineers and a cofounder are saying in the comments), check out the Materialize Quarantine Database Lecture: https://db.cs.cmu.edu/

I hope they write a paper or at least do a talk about how they went about it. Usually these things are more involved than an outsider would think. Agreed that you can beat most of the CAP tradeoffs with significant engineering effort, but i

These are orthogonal. An index is used to prevent a full scan of the key space in order to find a record. You have indexes in both row and column oriented databases. What a column-store database gets you is fewer I/Os on reads since al

Sounds like they’re open sourcing it to get some help on it. I have to wonder if they’ve found it not worth the time to make it fully production ready.

This is pretty awesome stuff. I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t been done before. It’s always interesting to see how the research world manifests itself in real world systems.

I was fortunate enough to read Native Son in my high school sophomore English class. While I appreciated it then, a few years ago I revisited it and read Baldwin’s response essay “Everyone’s Protest Novel” and other meta-literature around t

Synchronous replication really slows down write performance and adds in the complexity of needing to determine if a replica is down. I think very few people use it in practice.
