We’re not talking about latency though. The argument is around the HA story. Totally agree that if your app and DB are on the same machine and if HA isn’t a hard requirement, SQLite is probably what you should go to before PG. However, if y

Ah, we’re talking about different things. I took “network layer” to mean something like the ability to connect directly to the database over the network, not through some shim application.

I’m not familiar with MySQL specifically, but people worried about HA have standby replicas. Enterprise DBs make this almost trivial to do and it’s very possible with PG extensions. I’m sure someone has built a system like that with SQLite,

Do people build their own networking layers above SQLite (besides for fun)? If you’re doing that, then you need to build some kind of replication story. At that point it makes sense to just use PG or MySQL

What do you do if the node running the SQLite instance goes down?

Quite the opposite. Rust won’t even let you pull the trigger. C++ on the other hand is very much littered with footguns.

This is extremely accurate in my experience (besides trusting only myself, I don’t even trust myself). In general, the engineers I work with are much less “techie” than a lot of people I know outside of work.

I’ll echo the sibling comment and say it’s up to whoever is building the new service. I haven’t been involved with that so I can’t really speak to it.

The answer to this is “why not both”. I work on an Azure service and we use Server Core for our entire fleet. Most do.

I’d take the other side of that bet. Their walk-in walk-out arent doing well in urban Seattle. When I lived in the city, I hated going there and preferred going to the QFC nearby. I’d expect it would do even worse in a suburban setting.

I came across nocodb when I was looking for an alternative to Airtable, which is laughably underpowered (e.g. no way to query tables with any kind of expressiveness) despite having an amazing UI. I ultimately didn’t want to self-host so I m

I’m sure there are tons of people very willing to pay for this if it means not having to run their own k8s clusters. Managed offerings like this are expensive, but worth every penny for some.

I agree that most social media networks have been cyclical, but Twitter seems to stand the test of time. Maybe not with the youngest generations, but Twitter definitely hasn’t seen the exodus that Facebook has.

I don’t disagree with that, but I think it’s somewhat orthogonal. If you pay people back, the general reception is now “eh, assumed this was going to happen. Glad I’m not out hundreds of dollars.” compared to fire and pitchforks if there’s

I think it saves a ton of goodwill. Yes, you’re taking a platform from people, but it’s much better to not take their money too. Nobody is losing their livelihood, it’s a gaming service that can easily be replaced.

I worded it poorly, but I don’t necessarily mean a full exodus from the platform. In my experience, large enterprises have a lot of workloads running on different technologies (for whatever reasons) and the migration to cloud is a multi-yea

I disagree with the assertion that Snowflake has no incentive to improve performance. While I don’t work for Snowflake, I work for a competitor and we’re constantly looking to improve performance to make customers happy. For the exact reaso

Seeing scale issues as purely hardware bound is incredibly naive. Even in a case like streaming, if you’re pushing more bits through the wire, it’s likely the increase in usage causing the traffic increase affects the software systems you h

It’s extremely disingenuous to say we have “nothing”. The EVM and smart contracts really are amazing technology that I hope any technical person could appreciate, even if they don’t see a practical application.

I got into web3/crypto (hate both those terms) Twitter a few months ago and it took a very significant amount of time to find the signal among the noise if you will. Twitter’s algorithms heavily favor engagement which in turn favors “i

I work for one of the Big 3 cloud providers and it’s always interesting when giving RCAs to customers. The vast majority of our incidents are due to bugs in the “magic” components that allow us to operate at such a massive scale.

I like “fully managed”, but that doesn’t go far enough to imply the consumption-based model you’re getting at. To me, serverless is fine. Yes, it’s a buzzword, but it makes sense.

Anyone know why this post got flagged? I’m guessing it’s one of either the clickbaity ad-hominem nature that has inspired some less than desirable comments or the fact it’s an ad for a paid product. Regardless of either, I found the actual
