OkCupid having relationship problems behind the scenes that it diffuses using stand-offish, counter-productive measures = pretty much the definition of irony. This is terrible management, which will hurt morale even further, and smacks of c

Stephen Downes emailed me personally about that. I'm mortified. I've changed the title and have left a note, and am in the process of editing the text. The phrase predates the racist connotation, but nonetheless, I'm more than uncomfortable

Very cool. Rapportive is a great product. Well done to the team for a well-deserved acquisition.

Seems like there's an opportunity for some kind of middle ground. Books are emotive. Why not embrace the community's desire to make titles available in different markets, but manage it in such a way that the publisher is involved in the pro

Yeah, this is what happened here. It's an issue that makes me angry and I said something I shouldn't have. Do I get an "I derailed a thread on Hacker News" t-shirt? Definitely something I'll try not to do again.

A thousand times this. I find the ultra-libertarian stance that our community sometimes takes to be counter to what web applications have been about. Are we empowering people or aren't we? Libraries are hugely important knowledge transfer h

"It will get you laid"? I know Valentine's Day is kind of a soulless, transparently commercial cash-in on human affection, but way to take it to the next shallow level. Otherwise, cool.

Replying to Me1000, with hashes it would still be trivial to create a system that determines when a friend's signed up, and alerts you. That doesn't require a full address book entry - or any contact details at all beyond an identifier. It'

It's not a perfect solution, but I don't understand why Path don't hash the contact details before uploading them, and check against the hashes. You can still infer all kinds of social graph information, of course, but they're at least not

One of my favorite aspects of that is that they're actually going to make a ton more money while making us feel like they're treating us like adults. Don't kid yourself: it'll be $20 rather than $19. So they make an extra cent, which isn't

Great judgment. But if I was an overly cynical person, here's where I could see this going: Data gathered by voluntarily-placed GPS units aren't covered by the ruling. If they want the data, the onus is then on cities to create incentives t

Fair points :) I've updated my post to reference the MVP discussion - and the idea about 3D processes hadn't occurred to me. Presumably those films also come through the standard distribution companies though?
