The biggest downside for me is that from time to time (rarely) the compiler really lets you down. Right now I'm debugging the equivalent of #64650[1] but the cause appears to be distant from where the error is reported, triggered by mo

I'll take any opportunity to mention John Browne's "The Bug Count Also Rises"[1], which contains the line "The RAID is huge with bugs", referring to Microsoft's bug tracker. It was previously submitted to

If it was absolutely necessary you could even have the JIT remove the code and then de-optimize when you enable tracing[1]. That would solve the tight-loop issue.. [1]: https://community.oracle.com/blogs/forax/2011

Giving this advice has almost no cost and, at least arguably, it is better for staff to use Signal than other messengers. So, IMHO, this is good advice.

I believe many posts here miss the core point. The article is talking about _liveness_, i.e. modifying the program while it is running. One example of this would be Squeak[1]. Another perhaps more relatable one is modifying your HTML5 app f

Lots of things make economic sense. That does not make them possible, let alone probable. What makes you so confident in our ability to find solutions that you predict we will look back on global warming as similar to Y2K?

That updating the nightly toolchain gets more convenient is fantastic. It was oftentimes a struggle, especially when there was no build with all required components listed as present in the toolchain status history[1]. [1]: https:/&#x

Really? To mine it sounds like a compound describing how someone with a Java EE certification just defecated all over our code base. ;)

I actually thought it was the worst part of the article because it fails to put the statements into context. Let me quote from "0 And 1 Are Not Probabilities"[1]. > In probabilities, 0.9999 and 0.99999 seem to be only 0.00009 a

The example given is taken from Rust. Rust does not allow overloading (even in terms of optional parameters, I believe). Well, Rust allows overloading by implementing different traits but then forces you to disambiguate where necessary.

My assumption was also that performance is the reason we aren't getting more esthetically pleasing line breaking. Until I read a comment[1] by Philip Walton, who works on WebRender at Mozilla, that is. [1]: https://news.ycom

This attitude makes me so off the charts angry, I struggle to put it into words. I think Jews in Germany in the 1920s didn't think they were doing anything wrong, or feel a need to actively hide it.

Yes, I really wish that simple arrow functions were inferred for that reason. I've implemented a proof-of-concept[1], but I don't see it being added to the compiler any time soon. It's a shame because it would make a lot of m

Apparently the study could be replicated (with a neutral expression as shown in the example). Given that, I think it's unlikely that anyone is unaffected. I have two hypotheses: a) It may be a kind of hindsight bias. You watched the vi

I—a native German speaker—suffer the same tick. Therefore my guess would be German. Sentences like the one you quoted have a similar structure as those deconstructed in ReadsLikeGerman[1]. The "that" feels like the equivalent of &
