This would hit people with savings in cash (or bonds), i.e. the middle class. The rich tend to have assets (or foreign holdings) which should be largely inflation-proof.

There's an Italian saying which goes something along the lines of "There's three ways to get money: You can marry it, inherit it or steal it". I suspect that accounts for a lot of the other half, especially if financial services counts as s

That's sound advice. Maybe you could do government counseling too.

I also can't help thinking that piracy helps the incumbent by protecting the market at the bottom end. I'm pretty sure low cost or open source alternatives to, say, Photoshop would have a lot more traction if the option to pirate it wasn't

While I'm at it, here's that bakery tweet thing: http://www.eatmedaily.com/2009/04/baker-tweet-service-alerts... Maybe there's more to that niche than we're giving it credit for.

Fair enough. I had it down more as $2000 for the local car dealership, but either way I agree that cold calling small businesses isn't a strategy I've seen successfully exploited either. I guess it raises the question of how do you "go wher

Though it's not a great example, I think the assumption is that bakeries ARE an existing market for web design. Replace by "car sales" if it makes more sense to you. In my opinion there is something to getting to know specific small busines

What the author describes is the equivalent of premature optimisation for design. I regularly advocate a "get something up then refine" approach to our clients but it's difficult. They don't want to bear the extra costs and usually don't un

Is it me, or is the author confusing incumbent and enterprise? Office is not 'enterprise' in my book, nor is Yahoo. MS Exchange, maybe. SAP and Salesforce definitely. I'm not sure I see any toys entering that space. Mint is what I can think

This book is worth a read on the topic: http://www.amazon.com/Sources-Power-People-Make-Decisions/dp... It's been a while since I read it, but the long and short of it is that intuition is the only game in town, especially when making dec

I think that could be a killer Facebook app (if such a thing doesn't already exist), but I think you're being too smart for your own good. If I want a way to find out if the person I'm into is into me, then I have absolutely no desire not t

I had similar thoughts when reading his eyetracking book. In many ways it would be more problematic if these decorative images were getting a lot of attention; it would mean they were distracting from the content.

I found the Pomodoro Technique to be a bit like daily pushups. It really does work, but it requires discipline and/or a routine to keep it up. The problem is that once you've missed a few days for any number of reasons, it requires effort t

The thing that has really worked for me is disabling all the "procrastination" sites (Hacker News, Reddit, BBC etc) on my work machine and keeping a netbook / ipad in the living room for browsing. This is a light version of the advice that

My problem with that idea is that the design agency would have to have been in on it. I can't see them agreeing to put their reputation on the line without some kind of "it was all a stunt, we're brilliant after all" ending.
