Interesting that you should mention that. I've been thinking about ways lately to make software developers more famous - as I think the work that we do is as creative and difficult as the work done by actors, musicians, etc. Most of my thin

If this is true I'm switching to MOTU Digital Performer. I've been waiting for an excuse to anyway.

Logic team was distracted for the past year writing Garageband for iPad. Here's hoping they are now back to cranking on the next version of Logic in full force.

I see. I mean, if they're just using the storage backend, I fully understand - they realize that solving the problem of storage provisioning and redundancy is not their core business, and that they should outsource it to somebody that's alr

Probably. But, in order to run on Azure, don't things have to be written in C#/.NET? That would suggest that their production stack will also leverage these technologies, potentially on windows (unless Mono over Linux or BSD is actually mat

Happened to me as well... over a year, when iAd first came out, a friend and I built an iAd gallery app. Rejected. A few months ago I saw on Techcrunch that Apple had released their own iAd gallery that looked practically identical. Oh well

I've looked into consulting as a potential career, not with a behemoth like Accenture, but with smaller more specialized boutique shops (Art & Logic) or mid-size ones (Thoughtworks). All I really want is a wide array of domain experienc

Agree with this 100%. I'm a Californian in New York (arrived in January) and it was too cold/gloomy until about a week ago, and now it's too hot. One week of perfection? Really?

Precisely. I read the whole post looking for a link to the source on github or something, and then the last sentence was just a huge letdown.

I should add that I'm also looking into the "boot time" of dotcloud workers - if it's comparable, or better, I would love a similar tool :)

How fast do Heroku workers come up and start crunching? I'd consider porting my worker code to Ruby (right now it's in Clojure) if it meant I could bring it up in seconds. And they're billed per minute or per second?

I thought of something similar, though less surreptitious. I run a website that relies on a fairly enormous quantity of scraped data. To keep its dataset current I need a huge, continuous scraping cluster. I thought about letting people run

I was actually hoping that they would build a small, low-power GPU into the Cinema Display so that I can daisy chain five off them off a Macbook Air and have each provide its own "graphics card" over Thunderbolt.

Agreed. This narrative that entrepreneurship necessarily must be this ascetic, consuming lifestyle really bothers me. I think it can also be done in a more measured way that's less black and white.

I'd love to work for them. Unfortunately it looks like they haven't gotten around to putting up a "Jobs" page on their website yet.

Hopefully this also represents good news for the Mac Pro hardware and the Mac OS: If they're investing in from-scratch rewrites of apps targeting the above, they must see at least 5-10 years left in those products. Those of us who like powe

Mirrors my internship experience almost exactly. Three rapid-fire technical interviews that I thought went quite well, then a "sorry, no dice" email. Someone else I know just went through the same thing, also for an internship. Google sure

Cool - this is exactly what we're working on over at mileagebrain.com. It is a system, and it can be hacked - I figured it quite likely that the hacker crowd would be interested in this (like I am).

Unfortunately, nothing can match the quality of Blu-ray, and as other commenters have noticed, on really big/high-resolution televisions - the kind that movie buffs tend to have, personally I have a projector - it really makes a difference.

Well, I'll grant them that regressions occur during software development. However, it's highly unlikely they are unaware of these problems, they just deprioritize fixing them instead of things that affect their precious curated native apps.

They probably just forgot to rebuild the WebKit view built into the Springboard that runs homescreen webapps with the new JS engine. I am sure they will issue an update soon.

Binary plists over the wire? That's a hardcore innovation that I will file away in the back of my head for next time I'm building a backend for a mobile app.
