I like Wikipedia 100x better than Hacker News. 50% of the chatter here is robots repeating: logical fallacy , citation needed , not science , anecdote detected! , over and over. Like broken clocks, they may be right sometimes; but that

I'm as weary of motivational writing as the next person, but I thought this was unusually full of actual good ideas. As just one example, it offers a framework for understanding why I feel so frustrated: I'm only in year one.

In 1985, you might have said the same about pocket computers, if I'd called them that. But in 2013, the stereotype of the human staring down at their smartphone is near universal.

The Oculus itself will not change the world that much, but VR certainly will. The Oculus is simply a step towards real VR. Try to imagine a world in which you can actually lose track of, or be mistaken about exactly which level of simulatio

I felt the same about school: mostly, I hated it, and it was torture to go. I did very well, mostly because my mother instilled a kind of fear of getting less than an A on anything, which my extreme personality ratcheted up to a fear of get

I think the number of teachers is much more affected by demand than supply. You can't be a teacher unless people want to pay attention to you. I had an experience that blew those gates clear off their hinges, and into the nearest ocean

If you're in the US, that money is always for keeping you off the street, at any age. It's funny you mention retirement homes. Those cost more than my current lifestyle does. Medicaid, you say? Ok, but first you need money for a l

I'm glad there's at least one person who doesn't immediately get all profound over the oft-trotted theme of 'spend time with the loved ones'. I'm also glad it isn't everyone ; but I am glad there is one.

I can understand saying a statistic might be partly confounded by additional factors. I can't understand calling it meaningless. Just that it might not mean exactly what's implied. The stat itself is pretty hard to miss.

In all seriousness, I've long thought of what I do as moving electrons around, getting pits onto CDs in the right place, things like that. Whatever I do in, say, C++-land, is a means to those ends. An intermediate step. I arrived at th
