In this blog post, the author is reifying concepts and improving separation of concerns(1). This is basic software development. Which makes me wonder why the OP got the impression this kind of thing was "secret"? (1)The usual warnings about

The iPad provides the ability to connect an SD card, which fulfils a similar use case... but discounting the iPad, OSX Lion takes steps away from the filesystem, with all the files openable by a given application visible a la coverflow with

"...write code..." Congratulations, you are part of the less than one percent of the world workforce that are developers. As a developer, even I only need full filesystem access when I am developing, which is a fraction of my time. Having f

Files without a dedicated application will be the exception rather than the rule. Movies, Photos, Documents, spreadsheets, databases, music, books; you will usually open in a dedicated application. It's not hard to envisage an improved UI f

Maybe I was unclear in my earlier comment. The best way of implementing file handling is likely some full full-featured filesystem under the hood. My point is that this can be abstracted away to something more user friendly than a tree cont

Well, I can't disagree with your anecdote regarding complaints (although I have owned both iPod and iPad since they were released and have never had a problem beyond the iTunes file transfer flow being awful), BUT the constraint to the Appl

No, they do not need to know about the filesystem. Take the iPad or iPod as examples. They have full-featured applications and the filesystem is invisible.

Users do not know what a filesystem is. They don't want to know. Whilst the improvements enumerated here are undoubtedly improvements it's all lipstick on a pig. It's time for the hierarchical filesystem to die.

Frankly this is a good example of over-engineering what should be a non-problem. In the vast majority of cases the option I want is "keep both" - this reduces the chance of data loss to zero and enables me to get on with something that is m

Oh yes. The whole movie industry needs to change. When a new movie comes out I want to see it that day , on my laptop/TV/home theatre in HD. If I am constrained to a single viewing for a period, fine. I do not want to see it in a smelly, s

Well, if you want to use this provoking analogy, then I disagree. Recruiting for a company (whether that be a startup or any other) is like selling crack - you hope to make massive profits by taking advantage (long hours, low pay) of other

I also agree. There are so many fundamental issues with Windows that do not seem to be being addressed such as - the entire desktop metaphor (tired, outdated, can be improved upon) - the entire hierarchical filesystem metaphor likewise -

The OP states that web dev is overly complicated and broken. I counter that modern tools are far from being broken, and are infact lightyears ahead of what was available only 3 or 4 years ago. Not a refutation per se, but a counterpoint. *

If this post was written 3 or 4 years ago I might be inclined to agree, but with elastic compute, REST, HTML5, CSS3, jQuery, JSON, decent modern browsers and NoSQL databases we really are in (or are very close to) a pretty good place IMO. I

Does anyone know why the LSE purchased a company based in Sri Lanka for the work? I'm probably totally out of touch, but I would expect to find a company developing trading systems to be based near a major exchange (London, NY etc.).

Posts like these reenforce my dismay at the total and utter devaluation of the education system when dealing with recruiters for full-time positions (15 years minimum of full-time education, but you still need that one final test). That sai

Seems like you haven't climbed the hierarchy of needs, which frankly, is the norm at your age (from my anecdotal experience). Your twenties are a struggle professionally to become good at what you do. My advice; stay focussed at becoming ve
