For me the part that I'm saying nix-env -i rather than editing a config file and nix-whatever --read-the-config-file-again isn't really a big deal. It's just a cute tool to author and maintain user environments, I'm sure

I wasn't really thinking about language-level runtimes, like, I don't want to solve the problem of only having one global scope in python and running into module name collisions. I'm not sure how concerned rez is with shell e

I'm curious if you'd like to elaborate on what makes Guile more expressive than Nix for writing package definitions.

Does rez handle having an environment with two apps in it that require differing versions of the same dependency?

Mhm, doesn't sound all that similar to me. This looks like something that needs to be maintained on a per-package basis as a fairly ad-hoc solution for different library versions, in Nix the whole thing just falls out of the way it

Sounds like they're talking about perfectly valid email addresses that just aren't being checked anymore. I'm sure most people have like half a dozen of those.

its not just the lang. can't use two random libraries together because one still uses old hyper and another uses new hyper.

in C you're writing allocators without using malloc(), a part of the stdlib defined in the language spec. doesn't really feel qualitatively different to write Go without GC allocation. i guess it's more work but it's als

What stops you from writing the runtime in the same language, just a subset of it that doesn't in turn depend on GC?

This is a really cool, graphic example of the importance of avoiding undefined behavior even if you can't see it segfault or whatever.

Back in the day of Rust having a runtime, you couldn't call C functions, or functions potentially calling C functions, without worrying that it might indefinitely block one of the limited OS threads used by the runtime. With weirdly ty

It's so irritating that golang has x++ but not ++x. I never remember until shit isn't compiling. Grr!

Maybe I am misreading the article but are you really trying to position yourself outside of the consensus that child pornography is, at least, "uncomfortable"? I'm not sure that's really a custom limited to just America&

Not sure if comparing Rust's relevance to that of the gopher protocol is really a positive remark. ;)

I mean, I'm not the target audience and I don't have the attachment to OSX as a platform, but if I was gonna expend the energy to document a thing, I'd hope it goes towards a good cause and isn't just free labor for like

I've seen pass mentioned like a million times but I didn't realize there were so many third party extensions for it, the comments here are pretty helpful. Thanks for the submission!

Are you saying you never want to flush? If flushing after every line is good enough for printf then it's gonna be good enough for me~

The bar for being a business is pretty low, though. If they had the logistics and budget to pay for a lawyer, they probably wouldn't be hosting on photobucket anyway.

I wouldn't be angry about not letting people do the thing, but after letting people do the thing for over a decade, they could have been a lot more graceful about changing their mind. Like, I don't really blame them for not sticki

Is it possible to have a syntax extension (or even macro?) that creates identifiers that wouldn't be legal in plain source code?

Wow, I'm doing the opposite where I'm staring at all these other DSLs and configuration files and have to hold myself back from writing a bunch of nix to autogenerate them from.

Ah, so it's like sharing one password for everything? Edit: Yeah, with the crucical difference that you don't need to worry about the server's user database getting leaked along with your password.

This is a pretty cool scheme, but I'm not sure about the UX argument. The login flow itself is good UX, but it's arguably just the happy path, and now I'm responsible for irreplaceable data on my device. My device might fall

Because now people are carrying an MD5 implementation around with them, and when the next vaguely-hash-shaped problem comes up, they're gonna reach for that without really evaluating, b/c they've used it before so and it'
