Having read the article and the comments above yours, and being generally aware that there's some truncation thing related to SHA-256 and SHA-512 somewhere, it still took me until your comment to catch onto that.

I think the idea is that every article is a freely available promo article as it comes out, and then gets relegated to the subscribers-only backlog afterwards.

The security model for nacl is afaik that you run almost arbitrary native code. It was compiled by someone else, your input is basically machine code that you don't know anything about except for some please-dont-break-my-sandbox check

I imagine asking a major social media platform for permission is not gonna get anyone anywhere. What should stop people is looking into whether the framing is obviously fake.

So we're not allowed to draw inferences now? It's not like tumblr is gonna issue a press release to spell it out, so waiting for that before talking about the thing seems counterproductive.

Another fun one is that set -e export x=$(false) echo ok prints ok, but set -e export x x=$(false) echo ok exits early because of the `false`.

Slightly more useful than `set -e` is `set -E` and `trap exit ERR`. But still there's basically no way to make this consistently useful. Even if you religiously set -e/E in every scope just in case, if you're anywhere in a sc

I unironically agree with this. That's not a use of the generic German word for lightning, it's a specific reference.

I feel like comments like this only serve to further downplay how abusive selective enforcement is. It can't be so bad if there's in theory a legal remedy available, right? But whether you prevail in court or not, if you try to go

Yeah, looks like my mail backlog for that account falls a few years short. I guess I didn't know about IMAP back then, or had weird ideas about data retention. :/

Also this is a great example of having rules that are bullshit enough that you can basically do anything to anyone and technically be perfectly justified according to some agreement, but also enforcing them arbitrarily enough that anyone wh

Is there a way to find the precise age of your paypal account retroactively? It says mine was created the year of my 18th birthday, and I'm sure I did it all above-board, but it'd be nice to have it confirmed. Update: It looks l

Can I just call mmap instead of anything requiring userspace coordination beyond function scope if I need dynamic memory in a signal handler? How easy is it to fuck up the signalfd thing and end up not responding to SIGINT in a timely manne

`FnMut` just means that the iterator methods don't artificially restrict the user-supplied closures. `map` itself doesn't become impure just because you can map `|x| { counter += x; x+1 }` over your list if you really want to. I

The way iterators are used in Rust is reminiscent of the use of lazy lists in, like, Haskell, enabling a distinctly functional-ish style.

It sounds like the authors' motivation is to create something that doesn't need a central hub to compete, to fight centralization. I expect their idea of success is also very different from github's.

I never hear anyone use the -bi units unless they're trying to be clever, and I'm fairly sure at most storage devices use the power-of-ten units. Am I alone in that?

fwiw, in C++11 onwards, apparently NULL is allowed to be nullptr and not an integral constant.

There isn't a guarantee that NULL has a bit pattern that's the same as a true (void )0 C-style null pointer either. I didn't look it up directly but apparently NULL is allowed to be nullptr instead of 0, and nullptr converts

If it was only possible to do things in Haskell that are also possible in Java, that 'd be an indictment against it.
