This is a weird response. You can definitely argue that it's bad syntactic design because people seem to expect it to do something different, but if the argument is just that some category of programmer doesn't already know what i

Reading (or even writing!) rust code, you can get increasingly far without knowing what level of indirection you're operating on. I don't enjoy that. I don't personally feel like the notational burden for explicitness is enor

Hooray, congrats to the rust contributors, once again. :) Personally, not a fan of the match change. But then I was already not a fan of autoderef in method calls.

yeah i agree that seems like a generally desirable state of affairs. not sure if i'd sign the statement "you typically communicate via a fairly narrow, well-defined channel, and not via a morass of side-effects" though ;)

That helps with writing, but does it completely solve the problem with reading/code review?

I think when people talk about ergonomics of a programming language, it basically means "convenience", but more dramatic. If your language offers a good way to express the problem, but it's inconvenient (too much typing to wr

imo the dream of exceptions is deferring error handling so happy-path code can be straightforward and free of worries, but if every line of code indirectly under a try-catch block has to embody transactional thinking to enable proper RAII b

Wouldn't this be fixed simply by calling `addSubview` last (and designing your UI toolkit in such a way that you don't need to imperatively call `sizeToFit` after adding a thing to a container, but implicitly sizing things correct

Would lack of automatic deref be less painful with a "->" operator equivalent, or just postfix deref? I don't want to say automatic deref is harmful, but a lot of the time I wish I could locally deduce more about the level

I dunno, "newtypes" are a fairly popular patterns, and if they automatically converted between the base type and other newtypes of the base type, they'd not really be useful.

wow somehow i was sure i could get out of that just by having the destructor of the containing class in a separate compilation unit, that's unfortunate.

I think the starting point is having a by-value member of that class, which has convenient automatic destruction semantics, but requires the actual class definition in scope. To lift that requirement, you move to a pointer field, and if you

I really enjoy phrasing the problems in terms of where the state lives. The implicit state machine of where in the code you are and all the crud in your stack is so ingrained in how I reason about code, it's like it isn't even the

I don't think that's such an unpopular opinion. At least I think I'm mostly on board. :) I don't really want to write callback-driven code anywhere, but even for simple definitely-not-thousands-of-concurrent-connections

Whether hate speech should be censored is also decided by whoever is in power at the time. The Adolf Hitler regime isn't going to be prevented from rounding up dissidents just because Weimarbook decided to be supportive of nazis.
