I grew up in a rural village in Germany. The church operated the kindergarten and the retirement home, and ran some youth organizations with stuff like kids' summer activities. One city over the church ran the hospital, like, to the po

I personally know people have made 6 figures in non-senior positions in Berlin working for German subsidiaries of multi-national companies, just "Software Development Engineer". I don't know if that happens through job listin

Yeah that was the idea. I guess a lot of apps don't actually do that and just email you password reset links, in which case you can't actually recover the old password. :<

This is _specifically_ the one place where we require a rotating password too, so I think those experiments are informative.

If you encrypt the prior passwords using a key derived from the current password, you're enabling this sort of check on password change without really sacrificing security, don't you?

It's an abstraction over writing out the monomorphized version by hand. Zero-cost doesn't mean using the abstraction gets you the fastest possible implementation of whatever you're doing.

Surely in the preceding decades someone has written an explicit LKML client, that, rather than implementing email and encouraging you to post to LKML, specifically implements the much narrower spec of the locally acceptable post/patc

I've used NixOS at home since like 2016. While I haven't used it professionally or for "serious" enthusiast deployments, I don't think I can claim to be a drive-by user. I still insist on using nix-env because it&#x

Ah, it's not a direct argument when you omit the hyphen and fall into "traditional" mode. I think after years and years I can finally wrap my head around how that works. :D

I feel like `jq` does the "more like a language" thing better than `find`, but possibly its just a product of its time.

Yeah but `tar xvzf archive.tgz` also works so I remain wary of tar. Basically every time I have tried to do something that's not tfz or cfz or xfz, it went wrong until I checked the manpage.

`find` is weird anyway. The stuff after the arguments aren't really flags, they're a tiny filter language, with significant ordering and operator precedence and all that stuff. Using "normal" option syntax wouldn't

Yeah, we have a service that needs to use a proxy for most calls, but one component mustn't use the proxy, in a way that iirc is not properly captured by a `NO_PROXY` entry. Now the abstraction breaks down and the service has some ugly
