Publishers (in this subfield at least) usually demand ownership only on the final typeset manuscript PDFs. Those cannot be uploaded, but people are usually free to update the arxiv manuscript by uploading their own "final" version

Typically the work in a paper, if substantial, is done over a long time, so even if the main destination ends up being same, it's unlikely the route and sidestops are the same. So often you can wriggle a little bit and expand the paper

Gnome 3 users may find refuge in extensions, eg. shellshape provides reasonable tiling experience. Too bad it doesn't work with Wayland.

Photon rockets are not actually reactionless, because the emitted photons carry momentum and energy out of the system. This makes conservation laws to hold for such systems, cf. https://arxiv.org/abs/1506.00494 Now, th

Also, if you are already otherwise employed, any such work is basically overtime expert consulting work. It has to pay well, otherwise it does not make any sense for you to shoulder any extra responsibility and hassle of getting things done

It's unquestionable the Chinese script is more difficult to learn than alphabetic scripts. This is directly reflected in the amount of time children and language learners have to spend on it, and the resulting reading ability.

Incidentally, for climate change, the IPCC reports do define the words they use to indicate degrees of confidence, similarly as RFCs use MUST, SHOULD to indicate degrees of requirement. https://www.ipcc.ch/publications_and_d

If you work in experimental physics, you learn that "anomalies" are very common. There's something in the data that you don't understand, and you don't know where it comes from. Sometimes you find it's a bug in

What has this to do with persecution? If you read the article, there's nothing there. Some did believe his ideas, many did not, and he was not granted the job he wanted at a prestigious hospital (instead, they offered him a similar pos

Emdrive does not warrant any hype: - There is no reason to expect that it "works". Shawyer's original "theory" on which the design is based is wrong, the EW do not even mention it in the paper. - Two other groups at

The TU Dresden people did not "verify" that the device works --- instead, they identified many spurious error sources, and recognized that the final results were essentially null on the level of measurement accuracy, and unable to

Given that the diamond ring fad apparently originated from a marketing campaign, it would be interesting to see how well the belief that wedding rings should have a diamond correlates with where the ads were run. At least in the nordics, I

A reason to not include water vapor in a list of "greenhouse gases" is its short lifetime in the atmosphere. If you inject extra water vapor there, it rains down and exits the atmosphere in a matter of days, whereas methane etc st

I'm not Norwegian, but I would be surprised if this was really a fair description. The author appears to be making an implicit comparison, where things are well if they are as in GB. Of course, there is no claim of objectivity.
