What part of Linux' greater immunity to malware comes from the more logical permissions, and the more free-form naming? By that, I mean that "executable" comes from a permission, not from an "extension", and that "extensions" in Linux are r

This seems like setting up a strawman version of atheism, and then logically destroying the strawman as a method of apologetics. I'm not buying it.

I make no judgments about the moral worth of parasites. After all, RNA parasites may have driven the jump to cellular life. I just want to see the similarity between Balsam and both natural and artificial life hyperparasites noted and expl

Two things wrong with this article: 1. By not using the harshest terms possible to denounce spam and the thieves who spam, this article tends to promote spam as something we all "just hate" but have to get along with. 2. This article does n

To paraphrase that eternal optimist William Gibson, the technological and social windows for becoming Steve Jobs are very narrow. Also, does Obama know about Jobs early "blue boxing" days?

I always assumed that The Internet would turn into a broadcast medium, with big media companies broadcasting to The Masses, at a highish price. But I figured that it would happen by mandating a new, improved replacement for TCP/IP that had

Actually, I was just trying to point out that the word "quality" means different things to people. I was only giving a rather flip example. As you point out, my definition has a trivial degenerate case. But if I want to make a point abou

That's super catchy, I've used it myself when arguing against late-in-the-cycle requirements additions, but... "Quality" isn't something you can define readily. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_quality lists 20 things, some mutuall

This is an interesting article with a catchy phrase. But it must also have been an easy article to write, as it comes entirely from the "Us versus Them" viewpoint. The author assumes that his or her employer is always right. Worse, the au
