Not everyone. Just people who need the internet. There are people who don't actually _care_ all that much if their neighbors can read yahoo mail or not.

By itself it does not. If you have a bunch of machines, you also have a config system (right?) and they (puppet, chef and so on) have the means to manage cron tasks as a class. You still get cron, and the means to manage them across one's

You didn't say what operating system you are using. When I 'got into' emacs it was with the OS X-ish version, Aquamacs. Which _is_ emacs, but with Mac friendly bits. At first I used it simply as a replacement for Textmate, then later got

Time flies when you're having fun? Maybe we don't realize how long it takes to acquire a new skill. If someone had told me it would take a year to just become comfortable with emacs, I would never have picked it up. I already have sublime

They do have those. I've used them. They're pretty cool: lots of steam flying around. But they are not cheap: my aunt couldn't afford one for her deli, for example, but she could afford me! But it's still going to be someone's job to load

Common in commercial software, too. I installed version 3.3.0 of an EDI application. Couldn't license it, which was the simply importing an .xml file. I called. The fix was to apply 'cumulative patch X' available on their website. Now ..

How did _I_ learn the command line? By doing. Some reading, sure, but .. more doing than thinking. Like this; I was a brand-new programmer (COBOL). The Marines assigned me to a billet in the LAN team at my new command. A corporal wrote

I know a nice lady, who is in IT: she's a programmer, a web guru. This topic came up in conversation. Her suggestion? I paraphrase: 'Just make it a nice place to work.'

Clearly this is a YMMV thing. I was public schooled, semi-rural Oklahoma in the 1970s. The only diverse culture we had was 'town' vs 'country'. My kids, who _are_ home schooled, have more exposure to diversity because of where we live, who

You have a good point. I don't think it needs to be this way. A lot of tasks that we ask users to perform are out of their knowledge scope. We gussy them up with dialog boxes like 'It looks like you've lost your network connection, would

Ah. Shoot - hadn't thought of that edge case. Keeping the private key on a third party host would negate the whole point of _having_ a private key. I suppose one could dodge this by encrypting the encryption, or have it stored 3rd party a
