Quite frankly I think you are nuts for voluntarily living in China. And trying to run a business off the books? The punishment for that is severe enough here in the US, I cannot imagine what it is there. The only real solution to your probl

Very nice! Works just fine in Chrome on OSX. Found a couple of settings that I would swear I had previously set to just friends.

All new cars have diagnostic ports using open protocols. http://www.obdii.com/ has some of the details. They use the CAN bus so it would be fairly easy to attach a small microcontroller with CAN support and an 802.11 or GSM module to give

Tried it on my Core 2 Duo mini today. It sucked. It complains that it doesn't recognize the Windows version of my graphic chipset, and then when I continue it goes full screen with a pixelated image of something and starts flashing. I had t

And for more reasons not to use GoDaddy - http://nodaddy.com I moved all of my domains (60+) from them to namecheap after they killed off Fydoor's seclists.org domain without any warning. Before that I had sampled their virtual domain hos

To be clear, this is only searching public posts. Its just that a large number of FB users either don't know, or don't care, what they are now broadcasting to the world.

It has been that way for quite a while. Lucky for me I didn't enter the correct date when I signed up, and I keep it hidden so my friends don't start wishing me HB on the wrong day.

At first I thought the same thing. But I think this is a useful discussion to have on HN, since not everyone here understands probabilities or the realities of 'cloud' services. Maybe by having this the top rated story for a bit it will mak

Gee, how about we stop acting like we need to limit things to 140 characters? This isn't SMS you know. We do have the bandwidth to actually exchange useful information and real URLs. Twitter, bit.ly, et. al. are all pretty damn silly. Even

I have seen no evidence that recent problems are anything other than shared hosting sites getting cracked. Note to admins -- running your system with all the virtual host files owned by apache is asking for trouble. Use something like the i

That a nice project and all, too bad he's likely to have it go TU on him when his first drive fails. http://www.zdnet.com/blog/storage/why-raid-5-stops-working-i... I would also be concerned with the single point of failure with his fan.

Just use PayPal. I've been using them for years with zero problems. Their fees work out to be about the same as I'd pay for a merchant account, but without all the development hassle. There is also a new player on the block, http://www.gun

This looks like an interesting project with alot of potential, but with Chrome on OSX the video for Theora wouldn't play past the opening title, the mp4 was jerky and sucked up most of the available CPU and the others didn't work at all. Fo

Ick! So they are taking the functionality of dock/bar icon apps and reproducing it in each window title bar? Seems needlessly complicated and cluttered to me. I prefer a simple, streamlined design myself.

Interesting article. Although I think it is an overreaction. Obviously MPEG-LA could be trying to enforce their patents against everyone, but they aren't. Given the level of adoption of H.264 if they started to do so they would quickly kill

gvim no, really. The basic vim commands are easy. As with python you can ignore the more advanced topics until you are ready to take advantage of them. It has a GUI interface so users used to pointing and clicking will feel comfortable.
