I think it’s lovely that at the time of my reply, everyone seems to be taking your comment at face value instead of for the meta-commentary on “people upvoting content” you’re making by comparing HN karma to endorsement of papers via PGP si

You parsed the person you’re responding to wrong. They didn’t say that gambling only affects your life and not anyone else’s, they said it has an exclusively negative outcome and not a positive one.

MACSec is irrelevant for this purpose. MACSec encrypts points to point links, it doesn’t authenticate. That’s what 802.1x is for.

It’s port to port. It protects a link.

The whole point of the article is that the dotcom era produced long term assets that stayed valuable for decades after the bubble burst, and argues that the AI era is producing short term assets that won’t be of much use if the bubble burst

That’s irrelevant because the primary assets left after the dotcom bubble was fiber in the ground with a lifetime measure in decades.

No kidding. Just to elaborate for others, MACSec is a standard (802.1ae) and runs at line rate. Something like a Juniper PTX10008 can run it at 400Gbps, and it’s just a feature you turn on for the port you’d be using for the link you want t

I think it's fair to put more (or, maybe, less) nuance on that. Zero-days against browsers exist, zero-days against plugins installed via MDM exist. Sure, you didn't actually submit any credentials, but cybersecurity training and

Gas station prices in the US are always inclusive of all taxes and fees. One of very few products where this is true.

I suspect it’s something about how often in the US, taxes are added to the displayed price at the cash register. That’s not true in Europe, and is jarring when visiting or moving here. However, this doesn’t apply to gas stations in the US.

You script it by hand. I think figuring out how to do this faster is less trivial than it might sound. I agree that synchronous checks aren’t reasonable. But let’s take Lambdas. They can run for 15 minutes, and if you consolidate within fiv

Not _really_. AWS has a budget tool, but it doesn’t natively support shutting down services. Of course, you can ingest the alerts it sends any way you want, including feeding them into pipelines that disable services. There’s plenty of blue

Qwen3 lists Eastern Yiddish (presumably YIVO) as one of the 119 training languages. It’s available at various sizes including rather small ones to experiment with cheaply, and has good documentation for suggested fine-tuning pipelines. I’d

It is. But it’s not the only possible waveguide. The article discusses alternatives for a system that can transmit 5-10k signals in 32U. If you’re using fiber optic cables, that’s 5-10k pairs, in 32U. That doesn’t work at all. It’s light (h
