Lots of people suffered hardship or died young during the last few centuries. But writers were the only ones writing about it!

Yeah, when the Nigerian movie industry doesn’t have the same worldwide appeal as Hollywood, surely it is because the Nigerians are just living too comfy lives. Seriously, there are multiple reasons for the cultural dominance of the US, but

Given philology is also part of the humanities, who do you think produce these perfect unbiased translation which are just as good as reading the actual primary sources?

It sounds like you have a beef against academic historians? In any case, anybody doing historical research can be termed historian. Doing your own research is great as long as you have the necessary qualifications, but for most laymen the l

Euphemisms are not particular to academia. Euphemisms for sex and death are as old as language.

But pretty fitting that the highest-upvoted comment is a fake quote which sounds cool.

Real historians apply source criticism though. Historical fiction on the other hand often embrace the myths since since they tend to make for bettet stories.

Apparently there is plenty disagreement about what “low level” means. Historically assembler was considered low level, and languages like C with named variables and functions and nested expressions were considered high level. I have also se

My point is - if you are not getting paid, you can just decide not to do things you dont feel like. But if you are an employer getting paid, only an insuffereable primadonna would object to a reasonable task because it “feels like work”.

Ok, I would disagree that cropping is the best default. The overflow effect is typically unintended (eg. the new design was never tested with the German translation), but at least you can read the text if it happens. Silently hiding content

What would be a better default then? Scroll or crop? Breaking the word? Neither are great. By using “width” you are explicitly opting out of the default “expand to fit”.

But the css default is that a container expand to contain the content without overflow or cropping. An effect like in the logo only happens if you set an explicit width which is less than the longest word.

Changing ‘firable.fire()’ to ‘fire(firable)’ doesn’t solve the problem though.

If you think a method called ‘someMethod()’ is a good idea, then it will probably return a type called ‘Something’ and you are back to the same problem.

There is no way to calculate that, since current finds are not random digs. Archeologist search where they have reasons to think something of interest can be found.

Nobody is arguing that. You are wildly fighting strawmen. But the claim that “complex things like statues” were “not possible” is clearly BS.

We know sculptures and cave-paintings much older than this, some made with great artistic skill, so clearly no archeologist would suggest art was “not possible” at this time. Still a significant find and very fascinating.

Latin and Greek generelly weren’t part of womens education, even well educated women. The quip about “the absurdity to speak Latin in a Ladies presence” shows how Latin was understood as a “male only” club.

Yes, this is the same feature. The “abstract token” like “if” is used in the language specification and BNF but in the compiler implementation it could be represented by different characters.

Before ASCII, languages didn’t necessarily mandate what characters to use for operators and other symbols. They defined an abstract syntax, but left it to the implemention for a particular machine what chracters to use for a given symbol, b

If developers have learned to write mallable code, they are also competent enough to improve existing code by refactoring, since this is two sides of the same coin. Maintaining code is how you learn to write maintainable code, after all. I
