Umm, hardware knows NOTHING about threads. Threads give you a very fake view of the hardware. Everything about threads is an emulation over the hardware layer, hence why they have a large memory overhead.

We know the java libraries are there for lots of things, but Node is all about async and handling thousands of connections. It does this by forcing the entire ecosystem to be async too (including things like database drivers). By using a Ja

If this were even a tiny bit of an issue then way more spam would hit people's inboxes. Rejecting explicitly is the right thing to do. It's not always possible, but it's definitely preferred. Source: I wrote some of the original SpamAssassi

Note that Haraka does MUCH more than this simple library. It has a full outbound queue built into it which will send to appropriate MX records for outbound. It has many plugins for processing inbound mail. And yes it is fast - faster than e

Hubdoc is hiring in Toronto, ON. We are looking for a great Javascript developer, with good front end experience, will train in Node.js. We are pre-launch, and looking for a top guy to join the team at the ground floor. The team consists of

At the low end of the scale I agree. But once you start scaling it's very difficult to run more than around 40 concurrent sessions with a browser-based scraper. With a pure Nodejs scraper we can run over 1000 parallel sessions per CPU.

"curl" can scrape sites like that. Just watch the Chrome "Network" window and see what requests get made. Then use that. Scraping doesn't need a browser.

Partly the advantage is that you have CSS selectors to examine your document (I don't know if Ruby/Mechanize does that - I'm just saying what is good about node+jquery), and you have a language that all web developers know about. So it's ab

Sure, it can work great if your needs are simple. But if you're posting data to forms which you need from a database, and you don't know what you might need from the DB until runtime, it can get a bit more complex. Also worth noting that js

Phantomjs has a lot larger overhead (it runs a full browser). Plus it doesn't give you access to the full Node.js ecosystem (e.g. access to databases, etc). You can use Node's Phantomjs driver, but it spawns a child process to do the work,

The point is that people (core developers) are suggesting it is finished. Follow them on twitter, and subscribe to the mailing list and you'll see.

Downvotes, really? I don't hate on Node - I develop a very popular open source server in it. But it has some fundamental weaknesses in terms of how finished it is, and most of the core developers don't think those missing things need adding

Unfortunately the core is missing some significant features, whereas modules work pretty well already (though I can see room for doing pre-compiled binary modules like "PPM" does for Perl on Windows).

I don't think you'll find that reddit actually spins up extra instances though. They simply run 240 instances (right now). So it still seems like an odd choice, given they could probably reduce that to about 50 instances of dedicated hostin

There's probably more overhead in the request via HTTP than there is via IMAP, to be honest. I can't see any reason to make this switch other than being able to support port 80.

One nice thing about talking to GMail is you can use OAuth (via IMAP, XOAUTH login), so that you never have to see the end user's password.

It might be, actually, since dir is a command built into cmd.exe on Windows, not a separate .exe that gets run. It may be smarter to use "ls" from cygwin for the test.
