To achieve that CS would have had to put everything with a new variable inside a new function scope, having a major impact on performance and readability of the generated code.

Indeed it does - the only way to truly validate is to get that confirmation email through. On the flip side I do think there's some value in a service which provides a check on the domain - that way you can prevent someone typing in usernam

The Qt port of webkit is also really unstable. Quite a surprising number of web sites cause PhantomJS to segfault.

This is just awful. A quick scan of the code brings up the following problems: * It fails to deal with the case where there is no MX record for the domain (fall back to A record) * It fails to sort the MX records, potentially falling foul t

That validates RFC822 addresses, which is the full syntax of the From/To/CC headers. You don't want that for validating an email address on a web form.

I wonder what the statistics look like when taking into account injuries too. You can't get very injured in a pool (I guess you can slip outside the pool - but you can slip anywhere playing so does that count?). But there are probably more

Whoosh. Perhaps you should re-read the start of the article. It's about how atheists don't understand how the religious feel when you attack their religion with logic. Clearly you just felt attacked - well that's what he was trying to make

We may be talking about that, and that would be the figure to find, but that's not the figure the Freakonomics article used. That's the point. Here's the quote from Freakonomics: "In a given year, there is one drowning of a child for every

That's exactly what he's saying though - that the Freakonomics article does NOT break the numbers down sufficiently, for either Drownings nor Gun Deaths. As such the 100x figure they came up with is bogus. And yes, the Maths is simple. But

It most certainly is NOT new. We were writing about it at MessageLabs (now part of Symantec) years ago (in 2007 or earlier IIRC). What's surprising is that I gave a talk twice for Schneier's company Counterpane on tour with him in Texas, to

That's interesting, because PDFs are an inherently un-streamable format. It requires seeking within the file to work (hence why command line PDF tools can't take STDIN for the PDF file - or they fake it by copying to a temp file first). I w

Your last sentence hides another option which is the route we took: outsource devops. It cost us about $2000 in consultant fees for a fully setup system, easy to expand and add hardware to, and much more cost effective long term than AWS or

Bear in mind that Gmail by default doesn't display images, so their tracking won't work for gmail unless users click "Always show images from ...". I don't know whether Yahoo displays images by default or not.

PhantomJS 1.6 is massively unstable. Downgrade to 1.5. I'm really surprised this hasn't been fixed yet - there are bugs in their tracker related to it.

And npm ships with node, so this is no different. Furthermore npm can install git URLs directly too, including tags and branches if you need a particular one. Just specify the url as the "version" in your dependencies section of package.jso

The problem comes when you mix the two. Try it. Try scaling it (to a hundred thousand connections). I've done it and it doesn't mix. Sure programming-wise it's nice to have sync. No argument there.
