Even in 2000 it wasn't just about VCs. Big old companies put a lot of effort and manpower into new tech too. Those long established companies rolled back projects at the same time as the crash, funding was pulled from technology depart

True. It does far too little at compile time. I don't understand why. Maybe we need a "use compile strict" ;)

A lot more JS coders could benefit from adding "use strict" to their code too. It's frankly amazing it isn't used more.

I was once one of the most prolific authors on CPAN, and this, along with my answer above about lack of performance, drove me away. Perl(5) just needed classes and clean up a few bits of historic cruft (like the need to end modules in "

Along with the other excellent answers, one thing Perl never got was a faster runtime. This drove me into the arms of V8 (via Node.js). Ruby got jRuby and Rubinius, PHP got the excellent work Facebook did, Python got PyPy, and many cool lan

I didn't say it was faster than sphinx (yet) but it is definitely faster than lucene in all the benchmarks I've thrown at it.

I have extremely strong doubts about that. Everything can be modelled in modern databases, and SQL is probably much more powerful than you understand here.

This sounds like something you could just do in SQL and have it all done in milliseconds.

Pg's built in full text search works amazingly well and has all the smarts. It's also faster than lucene.

But note it's at the expense of a very large index file - 800MB (vs Mongo's 100MB). Although Pg's index covers the entire JSON structure, whereas Mongo's index only covers the leafs being searched, so it will optimize a

Whatever the cause is, it's still Google's fault/problem. I too have a big gmail spam problem (related to my email address being very short and guessable), and mark as spam on average about 10-20 emails a day.

My one story about Molly - I met her as a speaker at an XML Conference around 1999 or 2000. She was extremely welcoming and kind to me, a wet behind the ears nobody at the time. We went for a speakers' pre-conference dinner that night,

You do not need the full text for search. You can hash every word and search hashes.

I thought the same. For redis there's Kue, which looks a lot more feature complete. https://github.com/learnboost/kue

And many years later we had email viruses bringing the internet to its knees, notably the LoveBug virus which we were the first to stop at MessageLabs. Now it's all just DDoS. Far scarier, and a lot less fun.

It's not a wonderful world scraping that stuff either. I worked on a startup doing just that - we wrote our own after evaluating the various options including yodlee. The banks make it hard. The only good thing is they evolve like mola

As a keen rider (S1000-RR) I would love this. I mostly commute on mine and in the hot Toronto summers the heat is what kills you. I'm pretty sure this thing would run way cooler.

The fragility of parsing emails is a big problem though. But I agree that for the equivalent of webhooks it is the perfect platform, and simple scripts work. Except at scale.

Part of the problem has traditionally been that email servers haven't been as easy to "hack" as web servers have. That was a failing on the part of the developers of those servers. Thankfully now you have things like Qpsmtpd,

Also you need to support SSL as well as TLS if you want to support IE6, and surprisingly - Stripe webhooks (see my blog for details).
