It’s definitely worth reading the whole Sprawl trilogy. It establishes something of a pattern in Gibson’s work where characters from the first book in one of his trilogies return in the third, changed. The scene where Molly and the Finn reu

Another interesting contemporary work by a writer who’s still relevant is James Fallows’ “Looking at the Sun.” A solid attempt at sense-making the late 80s economic situation vis-a-vis Japan for the American middle management class, contras

Imagine how busted archived Twitter threads are going to look in 20 years. If linkrot in the early Web is bad now, how bad will “tweet-rot” be, after Twitter declines into disuse, quite likely fails as a corporation, and its CDN is scattere

I look forward to the deep dive on Yoot Tower itself. I wonder if I’ve still got my original copy around here someplace, after all these years…

The popup wall went up hard the weekend that Kabul fell to the Taliban. Perhaps they were doing it selectively before then, but that was when I first noticed it. Felt like particularly scummy opportunism at the time. Between this and leanin

I was one of the Aqua haters, but I got used to it quick after installing OS X Public Beta and switching it to the graphite color scheme. Doesn’t mean I don’t miss OS 9 Platinum, though. I’d be interested to hear from anybody who spent time

I think this is a worthwhile perspective. Looking at Pharo 9.0 circa 2021, it’s still got its own classes for Kernel, Scheduler, etc.

I largely agree with the writer’s skepticism, both of the coins and of the VCs, but shouldn’t it be straightforward if time-consuming to confirm insider selling? If these are public blockchains, one ought to be able to notice and correlate

Preprocessing for recycling is a big concern too. When I still worked at the farmers market in San Francisco, I overheard one of the small-time sellers telling the staff that she couldn’t take the compostable green Bio-Bags to Marin, only S

I would be interested if you could comment on this further, if not here then maybe in a blog post. Do you mean deeper ability to manipulate the whole underlying system, rather than being confined mainly to the VM? I put that idea forward be

Reading multiple books at a time has been a big one for me. When I was younger, this concept didn’t even enter my mind… I had one book I was reading right now, and I wouldn’t pick up another until that one was done. But I feel like having m

Interestingly, a large number of the people actively developing Pharo seem to be native speakers of French and Spanish. People from Inria are the lead devs, and it’s got a lot of momentum with South American universities too. I guess they s

I appreciate your illumination of the Scholastic format, and especially the quaestio phase. I find I often desire to understand the structure of a writer or speaker’s thinking, so that I may gain a better sense of how they model the world.

Here in California, the water supply is obviously a concern as well. The grower I regularly deal with was very concerned at the start of the year, and I doubt last week’s atmospheric river storm did much to calm him down. After all, this is
