the US does have excessive sentencing in some cases but citing figures like 136 years isn't really evidence, as they represent a theoretical maximum sentence which isn't necessarily anywhere near what the suspect will actually rec

that's true, but I think (could be wrong) that Axelrod presented his results as "definitive" given that no-one had simulated a comparable timescale before. it was certainly presented as such in the textbook I was reading from.

according to Binmore ( http://jasss.soc.surrey.ac.uk/1/1/review1.html ) Axelrod didn't actually run his simulations for long enough - when they're repeated w/ a longer time horizon, tit-for-tat proves not to be the ideal strategy.

this could channel money away from preventative care, which is far more cost-effective than funding later-stage individual treatments. $50 given for the purchase of malaria nets would save a lot more lives than a single operation.
