The cultural canon in the USA will lean towards that. I will say that, if we are to suggest more global reading, concrete examples are always welcome! I would of course recommend Journey to the West. Even among the Four Great Classical No

Yeah. There is something about carving out the image of your own mind and getting absorbed deep inside it. I will write from scratch much more than I need if it strikes me, break whatever rule I want, give names that only make sense to me.

I feel bored of AI as well. LLMs and Generative AI are exciting, and I want research and development on such to continue. I use Copilot at work, and sometimes it is scary on point (other times not). But at home, I like to do things by hand.

This is rather timely—I started playing with PDCurses after being inspired by Zed Shaw’s “Rogue is the Best Project”. It has been an interesting experience

Would anyone know how we, the American public, can push for reform? Illegal immigration and social issue flag waving is in every press release but we need to demand and hold accountable lawmakers and enforcers.

I wish in matters of religion that HN could have discussion with less polemics or axe grinding.

My thoughts exactly. I live in Florida, and have for 30 years. I’ve never personally used my insurance, and my parents had to use theirs once when the neighbor’s tree randomly fell in our yard, and they also had their insurance pay for mo

Socrates probably would have annoyed me too. I’m terrible at picking words. Can’t stand the popular notion of “debate,” internet or in person; so much uncharitable interpretation, obtuseness and deflection, and being held to a standard of a

I did a bit of casual research on premodern coinage and currency a while back, acoup and https://memdb.libraries.rutgers.edu/about-spufford-currency was a great launching point. I later compiled a bunch of findings into an

It is still inspiring for someone like me who wouldn’t even know where to start for something like this—-that is can be done by an individual nobody. The author knew a few important things, but more, did their research, asked questions, and

I’m glad to hear mention of roofing claims finally. I live in Florida, my insurance shot up. No claims, I live away from the water. I paid for my own roof. But a lot of people around me got free roofs, and I remember getting constant calls

From my own impression back then, it was less political but more subtly ideological. Truth be told, I have my own ideology as well. Some things that I remember were an article that used a trolley problem of throwing someone in the way to s

To be honest, even 18 years ago, long before this editor in chief, I found Scientific American rather ideological. Maybe it got more obvious over time, but I don’t see its recent tone categorically different.

I am still mad at the introduction for “The Idiot” for spoiling as much as possible and analyzing every plot point or emotional moment and then bringing up the author’s life on top of that. I could only imagine anyone who willfully puts th

In terms of protein and CO2 eq, the snails seem comparable if not better than crickets, if I’m reading the data correctly, with .7 kg CO2 eq per kg for the snails (edible meat) vs 1.3 for crickets, and 16g protein vs the crickets 14-20g. Gr

I’ve been wondering how snails fit into this. I know they have some higher calcium needs, but their carbon footprint per gram of protein is a fraction of chicken. Granted, I know most of their flavor comes from the butter and garlic they
