Indeed. I've got the Samsung QM43R which has a standard 60 Hz refresh rate at 4K, and also has a pretty good brightness, 500cd/m². It's not too expensive (€ 700 in Europe with VAT) because it doesn't come with a foot. Bu

For the last year, I’ve been using a 43” monitor. You would say that it’s gigantic and ridiculous. But actually lots of people have a dual monitor setup and nobody says that’s weird. One 43” is like two 24” monitors and it’s magnificent, es

Very interesting, but no speculations in the article on the price or durability of such a setup.

This is a great mission for mankind as well. A previous HN discussion talked about the possibility of a Mercury colony because it has water ice. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27741738 https://www.universet

Not a native speaker so I didn't know what an air table was. But since I've worked in labs, I recognized it from the picture accompanying the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_table

I hadn’t thought about it like that, but that does actually have a bit of truth to it. Realistically though, I realized that I was doing dumb, badly paying projects and then decided I needed to get good, well paying clients :D So no success

Yeah this is partly something I recognize. Until the age of 7 or so, my dad usually had left for work when we got up, and would get back home only after we'd gone to bed. When I was around 12, he no longer worked Saturdays, but he'

You can pick a great spouse but some people change after kids arrive. My partner had a great work ethic too. But after our daughter was born, that supposedly great work ethic caused them to keep working at the same pace, destroying our rela

The amount of electricity spent on creating and maintaining cash must be pretty big, right? Am I misunderstanding you?

Indeed. Some five years ago, I was explaining the basics of OOP (in Java) to an aerospace engineer, who needed to get into IT. It took him several weeks, and a whole bunch of exercises, to master. He already had experience with FORTRAN.

Your comment is fascinating and well worth the wait due to the insider info. I'm going to re-read it in a bit to understand it fully, but suffice to say: thank you very much. This is why I come here :)

I’m kind of curious how these modems work. Looking at the filesystem dump, these modems run a full OS. But why? It’s purely a device that routes IP traffic, right? Couldn’t an FPGA or ASIC handle that better? I assume, from skimming your li

How about mobile development? You can reuse some of your experience there. Does Swift or Kotlin/Java have any attraction to you?

If you can't draw, do pixel art. I can't draw, but my kid likes to draw while I sit with her at the dinner table. I didn't know what to do, so I grabbed some graph paper and drew a 5x5 pixelated kitty which she found very fun
