How about you try to transition to being a product manager? Lot’s of MBAs become product managers, but I know at least at my company, SWEs have switched over to becoming PMs. What they do is pretty different depending on what company you’re

We look back at the suburbanization of America with such regret, but looking at these pictures, it’s hard to imagine sticking it out in these cities during that time. I question how anyone who was alive back then would want to return to thi

I don’t feel that bad for the investors, or really even the employees. A lot of startup equity is worthless anyway. But screwing over your cofounder and COO—your partner who’s been on the frontlines with you effectively running the company

Best of luck. Something like 25% of food that’s grown won’t be eaten because of, among other things, spoilage. Keeping food fresh for longer would mean not using as much land or as much fertilizer for agriculture.

Hopefully (from a convenience standpoint) driverless will be the solution. Could still be zero emissions. Hard to imagine half the country migrating to denser areas within 30 years.

That was the result of a one time cost, their IPO, not a continuing operating expenditure. So, that $5b figure doesn't fairly represent how they will perform as a business in the long term.

I’ve been thinking of starting a cult. Not a real cult. It would explicitly be a fake cult, and it would have rules to prevent all the evil stuff cults do. But there’s a reason that people join and become very committed to them (or religion

Yeah this is what I’m most excited for. filter and map and my preferred array traversal methods. reduce can be awkward though, and people abuse it by using it to replace or combine filter and map. fromEntries almost makes reduce unnecessary

Yep, it can be a big motivator. I think companies should dangle those numbers around more. “Competitive compensation” doesn’t really mean anything. Saying top engineers can earn >$1M will make a lot of people ask “what do I need to do to

In theory, these stores could sell more nutritious food. They just need the incentives. Taxing sugar seems like the correct approach. Banning a type of store is very heavy handed, and likely to have unintended consequences. Schools should p

I mean using this project to counteract 10% instead of 100%. We don't have to rely on a single tool to eliminate carbon emissions, we can use a bunch of them.

That’s to counteract for 100% of emissions, right? A more reasonable goal would be to go for 10%. Still very ambitious, but could be done and would have a pretty huge impact. Combine that carbon pricing, technological advancements, and othe

Sure, but 99.99% of devs don’t need to know this and probably shouldn’t know this lest they decide one day “this will be faster so I’ll just do it this way” not thinking of how awful and confusing it will be for everyone else.

I hate these microperformance hacks. There’s no way you’re going to have a bottleneck here and you’re making the quality of your code dramatically worse.

This has not been my experience. I never take notes, almost never go to StackOverflow, and can find anything I don't know from MDN and W3 docs. Maybe it's because the things I work on are really simple, but I like to think it'

The article starts out talking about median rents, but the data they use is based on something called Fair Market Rent. There’s a link in there explain it.

The problem with these types of price controls is that it’s inherently unfair. If you’re on the inside and lucky enough to get a rent controlled apartment, you win. Everyone else loses.
