If AI takes jobs, it doesn't cause wealth to be redistributed, it causes wealth to flow upwards to the person who owns the AI. That might then be redistributed, but it might also not. Whether it is or isn't is largely up to the

The problem with the economic line of thinking is: Why do peasants in Africa have more children than Lawyers in New York? Builders in Arkensas have more kids than tech workers in San Francisco? Poor people in general have more kids than ric

Only on Hacker News would someone post a response this patronising and argumentative. I think the point he made was fine, and I'm way glad to have heard his story. It was lovely.

Isn't IQ a significantly more predictive factor than income?

The amount of calories we're able to extract from the earth is proportionate to the amount of energy we can produce. If we stop generating large amounts of energy, the population will shrink dramatically. If we keep generating it, the

>So the first example has to read from main memory only every 64th index Wouldn't it be 8 per cache line (an int is 64 bits, each cache line is 64 bytes)? I'm also assuming it caches a larger chunk of the array across multiple

Ok turns out I was way off, it's actually completely broken. Just ran the code, printed j at each index. >>> main(20) 2 4 8 16 12 4 8 16 12 4 8 16 12 4 8 16 12 4 8 16 It's not even hitting odd indexes. Over half the array

Am I misreading the second example's algorithm? Isn't it allocating like this: 1, 2, 4 3, 8 7 6 5, 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9, ... And so on? --- Also this part: >Cache lines are typically 64-bytes Right, but I thought when you acc

I use Spacemacs. It's horrible. It's: - Bloated - Slow - Encourages you to lock your personal configuration into the Spacemacs ecosystem, rather than writing it in generic Elisp so you can easily extract it (why I still use it). -

If being on the clock is part of your job it should be in your contract. Just sign out after 5, if your boss wants to make it an expectation they can bargain for it.

You don't need GeForce Experience. All the tech is in the base driver, Experience only adds social features. Uninstall it, it's just a vessel for advertising.

You don't need Experience for the overlay. I only have the driver and I was playing around with it yesterday.

Both examples read from the array before writing, no? So they have to read on each iteration. I don't have a super solid grasp on caching but it seems like his method of out-of-order referencing will still be hitting a valid L1 cache m

So will internet articles, but they're designed by professionals. You think that's easier to see through? But look, at least with friends there's a genuine understanding of you that you can try and dig out. An article by it

Let me explain my position a bit more. Articles by definition can't analyse you. The entire medium is ill-suited to the task. They won't be able to take a look at you and give their interpretation, which is what you really need if

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this business appears to be... A template? Like a word template, but the fields are separated so they're harder to navigate. Why would I, as a customer, use this?

My understanding is that it's more complex than that. A portion is silent, but disable SysMain (SuperFetch) and reported RAM usage will also drop considerably.

Some is hidden, some isn't. Compressed memory swells your system process (on Windows) as far as I understand it.

I think 90% of the difference is explained by package load. The more moving parts, the less stable the machine. If you run 10 packages from stable repos, Gentoo will be stable. If you run 900 packages from wherever they were available (more

Memory used on Windows doesn't mean the same as on Gentoo. Most of that is cached files and it will be discarded when a program needs that memory directly. Empty memory is wasted memory, using 70mb of memory in a 32GB machine is an ant
